The week empowers women across the country to get healthy by taking action. The nationwide initiative encourages women to make their health a top priority and take simple steps for a longer, healthier and happier life.

Why should women’s health be a focus?

Pujehun Youth Center for Peace and Wellness

We are working for three months to build a Youth Center for Peace and Wellness in Pujehun, Sierra Leone. The community has been greatly affected by the country's ten-year civil war, and one of the groups most impacted has been the youth in the area. School dropouts, teenage pregnancies, violence, and sexually transmitted diseases are just some of the issues with which we are working. At the same time, there are countless cultural and traditional elements of the community that reveal its beauty and strength in the face of these challenges.

Violence Against Women Glossary

In order to fully understand the scope and viciousness of violence against women around the world, V-Day compiled a glosary of the most common faces of violence. It is a sample of the atrocities that women and girls endure simply because of their gender.

The definitions of the crimes against women vary depending on the state and/or country. Local tradition often override laws and as a result many acts of aggression against women go unreported.

Promising Growth - Handbags that Give Back

For too long, Colombia’s good people have been overshadowed by the stories of cartel and terrorist groups. This reputation has prevented others from bringing aid to a small, but desperate population. On our last trip there, we met a woman entrepreneur that has been volunteering her knitting skills to help poor artisans in desolate villages. She asked for our help, and we created project "Promising Growth" or "Asi Crecemos" ("how we grow" in Spanish).

Heal a Woman to Heal a Nation Conference

Founded in 2004, what started as a pamper party turned into a day of empowerment and prestige. Created by college seniors, April 2004 marked the birth of The Heal a Woman, Heal a Nation (HWHN) conference held at Morgan State University sponsored by Vivian Ryan and the Office of Student Activities. The conference’s goal was to aid in fostering a relationship between collegiate women and women in the surrounding community. It persuaded its participants to look to each other and to become the vanguard for positive change within their communities.

The mission of Jer's Vision: Canada's Youth Diversity Initiative (the Jeremy Dias Foundation) is to support youth who are addressing issues of discrimination in their schools and communities. Discrimination is still a major problem in Canada, and youth are part of the solution. The potential of youth is all too often overlooked, and we want to change that.

Pregnancy Center Advertisement

The Tri-Area Pregnancy Resource Center has served the communities of Grayson and Carroll counties and Galax for years. Through free programs such as “Earn While You Learn” and personal counseling, the center guides its clients toward pro-life decisions and teaches expecting parents about the birth process and how to care for the baby up to eighteen months. The pro-life ministry uses brochures, cards, and models to explain to pregnant mothers that abortion is not the only option for an unwanted pregnancy.

Becoming the Tigress: Stopping Domestic Violence and Bringing Awareness to Women

I will be holding a free women's self defense seminar for my community. I have created an awareness lesson, including what attackers look for, current statistics, and how to avoid becoming a victim. After that, I will be teaching the essentials of martial arts to not only survive an attack but to avoid one altogether. I will also be adamantly selling raffle tickets, and the proceeds will be going to a local domestic violence center that is in desperate need of donations. However, I am finding difficulties getting donations myself to buy items for the raffle.
