Home Sweet Homeless

About 10 months ago 2 of my friends (18 and 20 years old) and I started monthly potlucks that we host on the second Saturday of the month. We wanted to help the homeless community in our city. We are all either high school or college students and don’t have a lot of money, so we invited our friends to come with us and bring food. The result was a potluck picnic that did not resemble the feeding lines that the homeless were accustomed to. Our events average 100-150 homeless people and 100-150 students and families that come to the park and share the afternoon together.

Spring Fashion for Freedom

This charity will benefit teen homelessness. As a former teen who was homeless, there are not enough intiatives to help them. A lot of times, as teens, we are self-conscious of our clothing, especially when we are homeless, and lose a lot of clothing as we move from place to place. I want to do a fashion show that will showcase clothing made by original designers, and will feature the message that clothing can be cheap, affordable, and accessible to homeless teens.

Create a Retail Store

'Create a Retail Store' is a marketing campaign that I created. I am planning on majoring in fashion marketing and merchandising (business) when I start college so this project is relevant. Retail stores, and many other types of businesses boost the American economy and serve entertainment for many Americans on a regular basis. Many people feel that retail stores are for 'stuck up' people to buy overpriced clothing and accessories, but that is not a fact.

Social Revolution through Fashion Solutions- Slate Theory

The name of my company is Slate Theory. It is a teeshirt and hoody fashion line that uses artistic expression, the power and impact of fashion, and the buying power that consumer's hold to create a brand built upon the principle of ubuntu "I am because we are".

A hip-hop creative funky urban street chic vibe with a social mission as the foundation of the entire venture. The corporate social responsibility aspect is not merely an attatched word to boost sales, but it is truly devised based on giving back locally and globally.

A Fat Rant

Joy Nash, with different guises and a witty script, sounds off on what it means in this day and age to be fat. It's not someone's sole identity or an excuse. It doesn't need to carry a stigma. Wear your body with pride, she says, and reject ridiculous societal norms (think clothes made only in sizes 0-4). It's okay to embody a bigger body as long as you have a healthy lifestyle, which includes eating right and exercising.
