Ministry Youth Project

Fun,Faith and Friends. Youth are full of energy. They are ready to "run the race" at any time. But youth have a parallel need. It is a need for adults to provide opportunities for them to get together, channel their energy and make a difference in this world.

Future Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Center

The idea I have is to start a youth center for high school students. Today's youth are often pulled into the negativity of society. Some of them lack sense of a true role model or fall into peer pressure. This center will give them the skills they need to become productive members of society. They will be able to learn social skills, get help with homework and enjoy recreation. It will provide them with a safe and secure environment.

Bright Futures Summer Tutoring Program

I am in the process of establishing a summer tutoring program for underpriveleged kids living in an apartment complex. The program will be called Bright Futures Summer Tutoring Program and I will manage it by myself. The program is for children from 7 to 11 years old who need extra help and attention that they did not get during the school year. There will most likely be from about 8 to 10 kids participating in the program. We will meet two days per week for a ninety minute period.

STARS

STARS is a class that six students created, including myself, last year. STARS stands for Students Teaching and Reaching Standards. The class is student run and we work together to come up with the best ways to help students not reaching the standard based curriculum. We go to different Elementary and Middle school classes to help students in need of additional help and/or English language learners. We meet once a week to discuss our reflective journals which we write in daily. We also discuss areas of concerns such as stubborn students and how to work with them.

Unlocking Today's Generation

I started a middle school mentoring and tutoring program at the Alex Spears YMCA in Greensboro. As Volunteer-Coordinator, I arranged a group of specially chosen high school students to have spend an hour or two one or two times a week with middle schoolers that are in the YMCA after-school program. "Helping" them is a general term to describe all of the various things our tutors do. If the child needs someone to have fun with in a group game of capture the flag, we're there, if they need to discuss a problem, we listen, if they need assistance with school work, we are on top of it.

After-school Program

"Eduacation is a powerful tool". Yet, so many students are struggling due to lack of parental involvement and outside help. If the youth is our future, then we need some help. I would like to create an after-school program filled with tutoring, outside learning, and educational activities. I want to start it off in my community, and hopefully one day extend it to surrounding cities.

Credit for What Matters

My idea is to offer high school credit for tutoring Elementary School Students. I believe that if credit is offered to high school students, a lot more of them will help tutor the elementary students. I know that a lot of elementary students go after school to tutoring but a lot of them don't like to be tutored by regular teachers. They seem to find them stuffy, and don't seem to think that they "get" their problems. 14+9 was a very hard problem when you were little, and they think that someone closer to their age knows how boring it can be sometimes.
