The Do Something! Awards honor not only top celebrity philanthropic efforts, but also young local heroes whose charitable endeavors reach people the world over.
This year's ceremony, which was held Sunday and airs Thursday, August 18 at 9 p.m. EST on VH1, awards both stars and young activists tacking everything from hunger to refugee issues. Five young semi-finalists under 25 have the chance to win $100,000 for their cause. The winner will be announced Thursday.

It's kind of difficult to understand what exactly the Do Something Awards are, but they somehow involve charity and community and improvement. Whatever the case, celebrities showed up looking nice at what is essentially the Nice People Awards.

If you happen to be watching VH1 Thursday night, you might recognize Carolee Hazard, a Menlo Park woman who turned a small good deed at Trader Joe's into a nationally recognized volunteer philanthropy, the 93 Dollar Club. You first heard about Hazard in the Merc in 2009, when she ended up lending a stranger with a lost wallet about $207 so she could pay for her groceries. The stranger sent Hazard a check for $300.
