I am aiding the animals at the Humane Society. This is an important issue to me because these animals can’t help themselves, we need to help them. Each shelter gets around 21 injured animal calls a month. They also get over 220 stray pick-up calls a month. This is a lot of work. One reason the Humane Society needs money is because with all of these stray and injured animals, most of them need medical attention. Medical attention for over 200 animals a month can get pretty expensive. On the up side, more than 100 animals at a large shelter get adopted each month. To add to that in a large shelter almost 50 animals are reclaimed by their owners each month. These kinds of things are the things that warm my heart. The only problem is that without enough money the Humane Society can’t afford to help all of these animals and will have to shut down. If the shelter has to shut down then where will all of the animals go?

I am a big fan of animals and I donate my own money all of the time. I will do anything that I can to help the shelter out. My local Humane Society is in desperate need of money because they just went through exceptionally large numbers of injured animals. I am ready to step in and help. The animals can’t help themselves so we need to do it for them!

why it's important:

Believe It

My organization is the Humane Society. The Humane Society takes in lost, stray, and injured animals. They also take in animals that are perfectly fine. Once they take them in they that any illnesses that the animals have and they make sure that they are healthy. Once the animals are healthy they test them to see if they can be put up for adoption. The people at the Humane Society make sure that the animals can work well with people, children, other pets, exc. Without the Humane Society those homeless and injured animals out there would have to suffer. My favorite part about the humane Society is that all of their work is completely voluntary. Nobody at the shelter gets paid for taking care of the animals. Everyone who is at the Humane Society is there because they have an extreme passion for animals. I want to be someone like that because they are dedicating their free time to help the animals that need their help.

My project is to sell food at the brat stands in most grocery stores. to raise money for the Humane Society. I would also have people drop off gently used pet care items such as beds, leashes, toys, exc. Then I would take everything I raised including the goods, and I would donate it to the shelter. I want to do everything I can so I would do as many of these sales as possible over the course if the summer.

This addresses the Humane Society’s problem because I will be giving them money to deal with medical expenses for the injured animals. The money can also be used to buy food for the animals. My local Humane Society is having a problem with affording everything so by donating money I can help them buy the things that they need. If I donate gently used items then the Humane Society wouldn’t have to buy them and waste money. I really want to help the shelter out because I don’t want them to have to close down because of expenses. I don’t know what all of the animals will do if the shelter closes. I will do everything that I can to keep my Humane Society up and running. If I need to also volunteer I will. I want to help.

the plan of action:

Build It

I have been working on designing my project for about 3 years. Since elementary school I have wanted to do a big project to raise money for the Humane Society. The first thing I did was write down my ideas. Then in fifth grade I actually did a mini project. I sold popcorn, cookies, and Kool-Aid at Festival Foods and I made over $100. I really liked the feeling of donating that money to the animals so I decided I wanted to do it again. I never had time, until I was enrolled in How to Save the World. When I heard that we were going to do service projects I jumped for joy. That was the perfect time to once again, raise money for the animals. I started to plan out in my head what I wanted to do. I decided that I wanted to do the same project, because it was fun, and I planned most of it out already.

Some of the problems I faced when I did the project before could have ruined everything. First, we couldn’t find the animal shaped cookie cutters, and we panicked. Once we found them we thought that everything would work out fine. Then, we couldn’t find the place that sells the popcorn oil and seeds that my cousins use for their popcorn machine. Once we found that we were on our way. We had all of the food and drinks that we needed. Once we got to the sail and got running, our popcorn machine broke down. We had to call in my dad to bring the back-up generator and power the machine.

While I was planning my project out for this attempt, some of the problems I faced were things like: where will I sell, and when will I do this. To solve these problems I thought about where and when I did my sale the first time. I decided that I will talk to people to find a place where I can sell when I need to. I thought about it and I decided that most of my free time is in the summer so I will do it then. The next problem I came upon was people. I can’t do all of this by myself. It would be too much work. I really didn’t solve this until I was telling some of my friends about this and they really wanted to help. I thought that they could be the “stage hands” for my project.

My project has grown from just an idea to a plan. I have researched my topic, and planned out what I wanted to do. I thought about times and places, and I even got some volunteers that will help me out. I like the idea that my project has a plan behind it. Ti me it is easier to have a plan than an idea. I can’t wait to start this and I really want to raise a lot of money.

how you can get involved:

Others can help by raising money for the Humane Society or, donating supplies, like leashes and collars to the shelter.

I helped in creating a biking event. It helps raise money for the local humane society. We have put most of our time and effort to build this charity event from scratch. Everything we need for the event to take place is all based on donations. The public will cycle around the city either 50 or 14 miles.

the problem:

I am working as a volunteer with the Humane Society of Hall County, Georgia. Our local humane society takes in over 13,000 each year from our local area. Sadly, a high number of these animals are put to sleep because they don't find good homes. It's a very sad that these animals don't find a home; I belive every animal should be able to have a family that loves them. It also makes me sad to see so many of the animals in their cages waiting to be adopted.

Our humane society has a big, fenced area where the dogs can go outside to play. Unfortunately, the area is not shaded and isn't very pretty. My plan is to build a memorial garden surrounding the dog run so that these sad, homeless animals have something nice to look at while they are outside getting some fresh air. The garden would also be a reminder to people who visit the humane society of how important it is to have your animals spayed/neutered, as the garden would be a memorial to all of the animals that have to be put to sleep every year.

I will need money to buy fresh mulch for the dog run, plants to spruce up the area, a tree that will someday grow tall enough to shade the dogs, stepping stones so visitors can have a safe path to the dog run and a memorial stone for the lost animals.
