OASIS (Outdoor Action for Social and Intrapersonal Stregth) is a project I am running at the Durham Nativity School in Durham, North Carolina. The Durham Nativity School is a nonprofit organization that provides free private school tuition to at-risk middle school students in the Durham area. OASIS is a supplemental retreat program for the students at this school. We take their students (approximately 15-35 students are expected to attend each retreat) on weekend long retreats to various areas that are relatively near (but outside of) the Durham area.

Costa Rica Education Fund

As a 13 year old American, I take much for granted. I realized this even more so last year, as I went on vacation with my family to Costa Rica. It is a beatiful county, with friendly people. However, I was shocked to see the condition that some children live in. As we traveled trough I saw schools (which resemble what we use here as tool sheds)and children going to school with no shoes and no supplies. Since then I have wante dto do something about it and I am ready to act!

Mama Tina’s Resource Center seeks to meet the needs of impoverished children who have been orphaned or abandoned because of a variety of uncontrollable circumstances in Kisumu, Kenya. Mama Tina provides basic needs (food, shelter, education and health care) to these children. With these basic needs met these children will have an opportunity to become successful members and leaders of society.

Current projects that we are working on include:

• Providing housing & education to orphans (currently provided for 45+ children).

Dream Weavers

Dream Weavers is a student-run organization founded by my peers and I at Columbia officially this year. The initial founder was Kai Zhang, and the current Presidents are Alba Mota and Taylor Ramsey. I am an Executive Board member. Dream Weavers have a relationship with the Asociacion Adimat, a woman’s crafts cooperative in San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala, whom our program focuses on currently.

Sino Scholars

Sino Scholar is a non-profit project supported by a Michigan high school club, Sino Club. We seek to lend a hand to those half-way around the world by supporting children in poverty to obtain opportunities to go to school. In the summer 2007, we gave $25 to two students each, making them able to attend school for the entire year! After seeing the impact of that small sum, we hope to expand our cause and reach even more students this year and allow our fellow sisters and brothers around the school continue to be students.

Because of extreme poverty, children are sold on the streets of Hyderabad, India for $10-15 and used as laborers in fields and factories, prostitutes in brothels, and human sacrifices in Hindu temples. The male/female ratio is off because parents kill their infant daughters rather than face paying a wedding dowry in the future. The Banjara Tribe is particularly vulnerable, as they are considered "untouchables" in the culture, 90% of them are illiterate, and most are born into the debt bondage that has enslaved their ancestors for generations.

It is a model that enables students to reflect, create and fulfill action plans while building a voice that empowers and is shaped by community. Not Just Any New Home

Standing in the driveway of the home they were building, the members of the University of North Alabama’s Habitat for Humanity chapter were already thinking about the next home. Next time, they decided, the home would be environmentally friendly. Now that home is in the design stage. It will be solar-powered and hopefully zero-energy, meaning that the home will use an average of no manufactured energy. The home will also incorporate energy-efficient appliances and environmentally friendly building materials.
