CardsbyKids is a non-profit organization that was started in 2001 to help out children around the world. The idea came after the 9/11 attacks, when Kathleen decided she wanted to help out others. Kathleen was only 12 at the time but had won numerous county and state wide awards in fairs and museums for her artwork. Kathleen along with her brother Dan created CardsbyKids, a greeting card business started by kids to help kids.
The cards have been sold in small businesses and school all over San Diego county and have been very successful. Over $3,200 have been donated to funds such as the American Red Cross Fund for Hurricane Katrina Relief, a Tijuana orphanage and Children First of Nepal.

Are you interested in helping children in the foster care system? If so, Hudson County CASA is currently recruiting volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA works through trained community volunteers to insure that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them toward safe and permanent homes. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and its volunteers speak for children in court, serve as fact finders for the judges and safeguard the interests of the children while they are in the foster care system. There will be an information session about the program and the role of its volunteers on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at 6 p.m. in Room 901 of the Hudson County Administration Building at 595 Newark Avenue, Jersey City. Please utilize the rear entrance as the front doors are locked after 5 p.m. Hudson County has over 700 children in foster care; most have been removed from their homes for abuse or neglect. Kids Off The Block, a prominent community based youth organization in the Roseland Community of Chicago, IL, has ignited a passion across the city in response to an epidemic of youth violence that has claimed the lives of our children in the past year. We are embarking on our greatest challenge yet, the launching of our Citywide Campaign called “Save A Teen / Do Something”. This new Youth Anti-Violence Crime Prevention Campaign will develop sustainable processes and relationships that will address the violence, and social conditions that face youth in Chicago and across this nation. Youth (especially high school age youth) who choose to advocate in an organized body, must also receive social support that can be leveraged into opportunities to overcome their circumstances. We will build a Coalition to save our teens and provide them the resources to change their lives “literally”, and combat violence on a citywide level. To break the cycle of youth violence in 2008 we must form a coalition consisting of caring adults; city officials, law enforcement, community leaders, religious leaders, politicians and parents.

Project Description

For my project, I am collecting educational recreational items for the children of a remote mountain village in the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic. I am aiming to collect at least 10 new mountain bikes particularly, smaller bikes for younger children ages 2-5, 30 sturdy chess sets, 50 hula hoops, 2 foldable ping pong tables, 2 volleyball nets, 8 volleyballs, 10 soccer balls with a soccer net, and a tether ball pole. The objective of this project is to provide the children in the Dominican Republic a source of activities implementing physical education through means of equipment to encourage the children to find fun in learning and introducing them to team sports. It’s my objective to raise money and purchase the educational and recreational items for the children in the Dominican Republic in order to provide them with the opportunity to have the same equipment and things that we have here in the United States that is most of the time taken for granted.

Project Description

The purpose behind Parent's Knight Out is to provide the parents of elementary aged children a night where they could go out and see a movie, or go to dinner, or go grocery shopping, whatever they want and just enjoy sometime without their children. The children will come to Oak Creek High School for many fun activities such as arts and crafts, basketball, pizza, poms, etc. It will be a safe, fun enviorment for the children, and the parents can spend a few hours on their own.

Students from Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School will go to a homeless shelter and surprise a group of children with a day of fun to help lift their spirits. We will have games, arts & crafts, face painting, music and much more.

Project Description

Mama Tina’s Resource Center seeks to meet the needs of impoverished children who have been orphaned or abandoned because of a variety of uncontrollable circumstances in Kisumu, Kenya. Mama Tina provides basic needs (food, shelter, education and health care) to these children. With these basic needs met these children will have an opportunity to become successful members and leaders of society.

Current projects that we are working on include:

• Providing housing & education to orphans (currently provided for 45+ children).

• Providing at least 1 meal a day to over 100 people in the surrounding area.

• Helping young women who have been subject to abuse.

We are currently trying to expand by building wells to provide clean water for more people. It costs around $10,000 to build. Clean water reduces the chances of people contracting diseases such as cholera, malaria and dysentery.

We have many fundraisers we are currently undertaking and welcome any additional ideas. All proceeds from the current fundraisers will go directly to building these wells.
We will be holding a Mother’s Day Flower sale where we will be selling potted tulips along with a mixture of other assorted flowers. If you would like more information please feel free to contact us.

• Expanding orphanage to include more children

• Providing multiple meals to people in the community

• Increasing our volunteer base

• Creating separate housing for male & female residents at Mama Tina’s

The Reality Check has been working extremly hard with getting the community together and feel that although we have been trying our best, there is still so much more that needs to be done.
This summer, our main goal is going to be making the lives of homeless people in our community a little more happy & healthy and a lot less stressed.
One of the main things that we want to go, is give back to the kids. Yeah, we feed them, and donate our old stuff. But do they ever really get anything new? They never chose to be out on the streets, that's just how they have been brought up.
So we want to raise money for them. We have been doing fundraisers, car washes and everything in the book but we are no where near any type of donation that we would like to donate.
We, as a team, brainstormed possibly throwing a benefit night and do a "dance marathon" to raise money to "revamp" our neighborhood homeless shelter. People would get sponsered to dance all night, and we would collect the money, plus additional people that want to come in and dance for just a little bit. It could be a really big thing, and get press, etc. Which could lead to REALLY generous donations.
With the money we save up, we could hopefully donate a large share to our local homeless shelter but also a large portion could go to projects we've come up with for the kids.
Such as getting a box and filling it with toys so that when its a child's birthday he/she can go in and pick a present. And they would be getting something whether they're parents could've afforded one or not.
Also, for holidays such as christmas, etc. Getting people to buy gifts for the kids who might not have gotton presents otherwise.
Or for the new school year. Getting gift cards for kids to get a brand new outfit for the first day. Or school supplies, so that they can still be hip.
We have so many more creative ideas just waiting to surface. !!! We are so excited with this idea and cannot wait to find what the future has in store with this project!
