Project Description
I have always wanted to be a giving part of my community. In church, I always learned that we should get out and do something, but we never went anywhere. I wanted to volunteer at the local children's hospital, garden, clean up the parks, and more but never knew how to get started.
Now, I'm a girl scout leader. Our troop started last year with no funds, but big ideas. We are a crew of 35 1st-5th graders and two 13 year-olds, and we wish to make a difference in our community. We are already planning 1-2 trips to the park this spring to *garden and clean up neglected areas.* Every time we visit the park, the dirt area around the playgrounds and other areas is bare. Our goal is to make the park a cleaner, colorful, and inviting place to visit and enjoy. With funding, we can go every time we meet this spring and get more teenagers involved.
Gardening is our first step, but any remaining funds would support us as we also want to help out at the *local children's hospital* by creating and delivering get-well packages and providing the children's wing with engaging toys, games, and books. Joy makes a child's stay more pleasant, and that leads to a speedier recovery. Our plan was to do this back in November or December, but as it is our first year, and those were our first months, it was difficult to know where to start.
Our third activity is to host a *Learn to Ride/Bike Safety* day at our park. As an avid bicycler, I want to give the joy of riding my community. Riding is great for the health, the environment, and in a city of 8 mill, is often as fast if not faster than public transportation. (I know-I've tested it repeatedly) Plus, it's practically free. Such an event requires tools, cones, repair kits, a couple signs, and lots of stickers. I have contacted a local organization that trains volunteers to give these lessons in their community. With their training, your financial support, and my friends and troop as volunteers I know we can do it.
We have many goals and desires but not the funds. With your assistance, we would be able to get out and do more for our community. Your assistance would help cover the cost of for plants, gloves, shovels, mulch, bike tools, repair kits, cones, games and care packages for hospital children, and foundation for my troop to become an involved part of our community. I am certain that your support would give us the spark to keep active in our community for years to come.
Funds would certainly carry us through gardening activities. Remaining funds would be reserved for hospital and bicycle activities. I don't know how much each would cost us, but I do know the more funds we have available, the more we can get done.
We are planting herbs and edible plants on a small scale this week to learn about being a part of our environment. In two weeks, we will be planting and cleaning up our park. Always on Fridays.
