Clean up a Park or Playground
Care about health but weren’t born a marathon runner or the next Michael Jordan? Don’t sweat it. The first step to staying in shape is to have a safe park or place to play sports. Maybe there’s one in your town but it’s, well, less than great. Volunteer to clean it up and while getting a little physical activity in for yourself, you’ll create a place for kids in your community to come out and play and become healthier.
Step 1
Find a park or playground. Visit places around you, and see if any of them can use some cleaning up. Think about which is most realistic for you to work at.
Step 2
Make a plan. Make a list of things that you would want to do when cleaning up the park. Some ideas include:
- Picking up trash
- Painting
- Raking leaves
- Sweeping walkways, basketball courts, etc.
- Fixing squeaky or broken playground equipment
- Planting/gardening flowers or trees
Step 3
Contact the important people. Set up a meeting with someone in your town/city government’s parks and recreation department and tell them what’s going on. Explain to them what you want to do and what your plans are. Having specific ideas will definitely make you appear more professional and serious, so try and approach them with a detailed plan.
Step 4
Recruit friends and find necessary equipment. Find a good group of people to help you out. Ask them what they are good at and assign people to certain tasks. Also, ask them what tools they or their parents may have that you could use. Some things you may need include:
- Rakes
- Brooms
- Ladders
- Shovels
- Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Buckets
- Wheelbarrows
- Flowers/Plants/Seeds
Step 5
Try to find donors. You don’t need to, but maybe you can find a local business or parents of young kids who would be willing to donate time, money, or items such as new paint. It doesn’t hurt to ask!
Step 6
Clean up! Make the park or playground look like new. Make sure everything you do is safe, and safe for the people who will be going to the area when you are done. Take before and after pictures for bragging later.
Step 7
Tell people about it. Publicize, and let people know about how awesome the park looks now and how excited kids will be with the new playground. After all your hard work, you want to make sure that people use the area. Maybe you can encourage everyone to come out for a huge picnic after you’re done to enjoy the area.
Step 8
Tell us! Tell us about it on our [Projects Page]!
