Major League Baseball has the best overall team, and we're not talking about baseball. A lineup of actors, artists, athletes, foundations, doctors, and businesses all fall in line to find a cure for cancer, and just in time for tonight's big game.
MLB, already a promoter of breast and prostate cancer awareness jumped on
board to support a huge phenomenon-it's called "Stand up 2 Cancer." Those of
you that haven't seen the all-star (hey, it's fitting) commercial starring
Susan Sarandon, Christina Ricci, Morgan Freeman, Jodie Foster, Tobey
Maguire, Casey Affleck, Sidney Poitier, Keanu Reeves, and Tilda Swinton,
you're in the dark! The new initiative is to find a cure for cancer and
MLB, as their first donor, offered $10 million dollars! All 30 MLB teams jumped on the chance promote SU2C at their games and public events and will be doing so throughout the season.
"Stand Up To Cancer," is a program created by the non-profit Entertainment
Industry Foundation. It was established by media, entertainment and
philanthropic leaders who have borne the brunt of cancer in life-altering
ways. The goal is to bring people, TV and the Internet together to generate
awareness about the disease.
Tom Werner, chairman on the Boston Red Sox and long-time Hollywood producer,
noted that this is the first time all industries are genuinely coming
together to create awareness: "I think we are getting closer to several
cures." Werner said in an interview. "This really is a commitment we need to
have to push it one step closer. I believe this group is going to raise
hundreds of millions of dollars. It's going to save lives. What else is
there?"
The next step? At tonight's game sexy celebrities Sarah Jessica Parker and
Sheryl Crow are kicking off the new phase of the "SU2C" Campaign, which
includes a brand-new PSA by Jessica Biel and a chance to text a five dollar
donation during the game to a cause that will never go out of style.
Stay tuned for the "Stand up To Cancer" nationally televised fundraising
telethon hosted by-get ready, all three major networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC!
On September 5th from 8-9. Our prediction? Some serious record-breaking
fundraising.
