People Magazine released today their special 100 most beautiful people issue. We, of course, were drawn to the “More than Skin Deep” article, which looked at stars who are shining from the inside.

Their list as follows:

David Beckham, for serving as Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund. The heart-of-gold footballer says of being asked by Kofi Annan to campaign for kids’ rights around the world: “It was one of the proudest moments of my life, and remains so.”

Also working with UNICEF, the gorgeous Salma Hayek has partnered with Pampers to provide a tetanus shot to babies in developing countries for every pack of diapers sold with a UNICEF logo. For the new mom, nothing could be simpler: “You give them a vaccine, they don’t die.”

Meanwhile, some of our top female stars are supporting education here in the U.S. The “I Have a Dream” Foundation, which supports an entire first grade class at a low-performing school is Jennifer Garner’s charity of choice. While Queen Latifah runs the Lancelot H. Owens Foundation, a college scholarship program created in honor of her brother, a police office who was killed in a motorcycle accident.

New mommy Salma Hayek is taking her new role oh-so-serious. She’s so happy that her little wonder Valentina Paloma is healthy that she’s teaming up with Pampers and UNICEF to help make sure that moms all over the world can get access to life-saving tetanus vaccinations.

One Pack = One Vaccine is a joint Pampers and UNICEF global initiative that works to provide tetanus vaccinations for moms in developing nations worldwide. Salma serves as the North American ambassador for the Pampers/UNICEF partnership in the U.S. and Canada to help raise awareness of this program in TV commercials, print and online ads, as well as personal appearances.

In a statement, Salma said, "In our own small way, this is an opportunity for moms like me here in North America to help other mothers on a global level. I’m honored to work with Pampers and UNICEF to help raise awareness of this important program." (SOURCE)

From April 1 through June 30, 2008, for every specially marked pack of Pampers product purchased in the U.S. and Canada, Pampers will provide UNICEF with funding for one tetanus vaccine for a mother in need worldwide.

Salma Hayek, activist and new mommy, is dedicated to eradicating violence against women. She is participating in V to the Tenth on April 12th in New Orleans, an event held by V-day will feature performances from the award winning play “The Vagina Monologues” by an all star cast including Oprah Winfrey, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Hudson, Jane Fonda, Ali Larter, Glenn Close, Rosario Dawson, Julia Stiles, and Kerry Washington.

The event will raise funds for groups ending violence against women worldwide. V-Day is a global non-profit that raises funds and awareness to end violence against women and girls, through art and action. You can buy tickets to the event also by going to the V-Day website!

In an interview with Glamour magazine, Salma Hayek talked about getting involved in the fight against domestic violence and how much more important it is to her now that she has a daughter.

Salma said she wants women to know that they are not alone,

"I am involved because I want women to know, in their dark hour, they are not alone. When they think nobody loves them or they’re disposable, or that it’s OK to die under those circumstances because they’re not important, I want them to know people care."

She went on to say that every individual should take part in some kind of action and do something,

I think that it’s important for every single person, no matter what they do in life, to participate in the well-being of humanity and the planet. Don’t let a year go by knowing you didn’t make an effort to do something—no matter how small—outside your own problems and drama.

Salma hits the nail right smack dab on the head! She goes on to say that entertainers, such as actors and actresses, can make a difference because they already have people's attention,

Art and activism seem to go together naturally, the idea being that if you’re an entertainer, you can have a voice, and if you have a voice, you can make a difference.

Word. That is our mantra here at Celebs Gone Good, celebrities can use their fame to change the world -- and Salma Hayek has proven herself to earn the title of Celeb Gone Good!

Q’orianka Kilcher, who did an amazing job as Pocahontas in The New World, was all smiles on the green carpet. She told our reporters that she protects the environment by driving a hybrid and recycling.

Molly Sims was there to walk the grass green carpet. She said that we need to get the message out to our younger generation- “it’s something that anybody can do, whether you let your shower run fifteen seconds less than you did the day before." She suggested using vinegar and water instead of bleach. And to prove her committment to the environment she said, “I’m giving up my BMW X5 that I love, but you know what, I don’t need it."

Most celebs arrived at the event in hybrids, but a few opted for the more traditional gas-guzzling limos. Some, like Salma Hayek, even rocked organic apparel.

Jason Lewis, Oliver Stone, and Bill Maher also stopped by the Global Green party on last night.

The 5th Annual Global Green pre-Oscar party was a hit-- and not just because it celebrated the earth! The party raised a whopping $420,000-- green that will be used to create eco-friendly infrastructure across the country through Global Green's efforts in New Orleans and Los Angeles.

Even though the party made its own carbon footprint, Ruben Aronin, a spokesperson for Global Green said it was worth it,

"We have the opportunity here in Hollywood to use the megaphone of celebrity to inspire and educate hundreds of millions of people around the world."

Eco-friendly celebs came out to enjoy the night and our very own Celebs Gone Good reporters were there to get the scoop!

Salma Hayek came dressed in a Stella McCartney pant-suit and said she is more concerned about the environment now that she is a new mommy. Hyatt, who serves on the local Global Green board, said it is important to be conscious of the environment because, "we don't know what's going to become of the world we live in today."

Tate Donovan, from the hit show Damages (and also played one of Rachel's crushes on Friends) showed up on his bike! He showed his love for the environment by opting for a bike rather than a car and he said he is even thinking about riding his wheels to the Oscars on Sunday night!

The party featured earth-friendly furniture and lighting and organic cocktails with performances by Michelle Branch, Damien Rice, and the cast of Once.

The stars came out last night for a huge NYC party to benefit Madonna's Raising Malawi Foundation. Like any good Hollywood style event, the fundraiser doubled as a fashion party, hosted by Gucci, who coincidently is opening a new store in New York tomorrow. Even though these star-studded fundraisers make my skin itch, I realize they do pull in the cash flow. The event last night raised a hefty $3.7 million... so I guess I can deal with the image of primped up celebs munching on truffles and caviar. Even Madonn's daughter, Lourdes, was looking glam.

Everyone came out last night, and I mean everyone -- Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Rock, Gwen Stefani, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Drew Barrymore, Amy Adams, Brooke Shields, Salma Hayek, Madonna, and a very pregnant JLo. Rihanna, Timbaland, and Alicia Keys performed right after Madonna showed videos and introduced children from Malawi. Each guest paid $2500 to $10,000 for the dinner.

The proceeds are going to be split between the Raising Malawi Foundation and the US Fund for UNICEF, both charities are dedicated to helping poor and sick children around the world. According to UNICEF, HIV/AIDS affects almost 1 million people in Malawi, 83,000 of which are children, and half of the country's 1 million orphans have lost one or both parents to AIDS. source

Fresh from the BRICK excitement, I've got a few new items to report on that are completely unrelated to last night. As promised, however, I will post some video clips from the awards soon . . . keep checking back.

First up, today, let's take a look at the work that a (very pregnant!) Salma Hayek has been crusading in conjunction with Marie Claire magazine.

The Internet Movie Database is reporting that Hayek has decided to endorse and activly drive a campaign to eradicate domestic violence. She speaks out against the cultural and social oppression of women and voices compassion for women who are furter victimized in their own homes as the result of abuse. I think it should be in the upcoming issue, but I will check and let you know. Incidentally, Salma has been working toward domestic violence prevention for several years, having teamed up with Avon in the past for a similar campaign.

I'm glad that this issue is getting some exposure right now . . . it feels like there is SO much (necessary!) high-profile attention on global issues like the environment, poverty, and infectious disease right now, but not as much of a focus on consistent domestic problems like abuse, foster/adoptive care, addiction recovery services, and education. Maybe this campaign will help empower women to speak up and ask for help where needed. At the very least, hopefully it will help highlight services and options available to women who need help and don't know where to turn. I really do believe that the great danger of an issue like this in not talking about it. Keeping it secret gives it power. Let's speak up, create a dialogue, and encourage others to do the same.
