UnityLove 2008 | CHOOSE LIFE NOW!

OUR COMMUNITY Greater Richmond, VA and surrounding areas. Our goal is to promote change, hope, encouragement and faith. To many of our people, especially young people are loosing their lives for reasons that simple don't make sense. In 2006, the city of Richmond had a total of 2041 violent crimes; 76 of them being murders, 76 of them being murders. We also had 76 rape victims, 987 robberies, and 902 aggravated assaults; according to the final 2006 FBI Crime Reports. There has to be a change. No one person can do it alone, it has to be done as a community.

Nonviolence Rally & Resource Fair

This rally is a much needed event at the end of the summer because statistically much of the inner city violence goes on the rise during this time. For example, during the summer of 2007, when for the entire year there were over 400 murders, especially among young men of African American decent, there were over 100 occurring during the summer months. Just this past February, a young man was gunned down across the street from a community recreation center which houses a large after school program and day care with over 100 school age youth.

LinkEducation

Despite the number of educational organizations, the achievement gap between high-income and low-income students continues to grow. In 2005, only 11% and 8% of black eighth graders were proficient in reading and math, respectively, compared with 37% of white students (NAEP). Often communities need after school programs or alternative schools but aren’t aware of what options exist. Similarly, there are schools and education organizations doing great things, but not enough people know about them.

Young Leaders Contributing Back to the Community

The community we are helping is our local communities and in general all the community around us. We will reach out the nearby cities for now, and in the future my vision is to grow into the other regions, states even countries! The problem I'm trying to solve is the unawareness youth have now of global problems which will never be even approached without the experience, education and voice to do so. These kids will strengthen their speaking skills which will be an important asset in getting our opinions out.

KaPhunga Village Project

Swaziland has the highest concentration of HIV/AIDS in the world, with two-fifths of the adult population infected. The life expectancy there is 40 years, and in 2003, 17,000 deaths occurred due to AIDS. This constant devastation of the population has resulted in many households run entirely by children, and the number of orphans grows every day. The goal of our project is to improve the educational facilities and programs within rural Swaziland. With the money that we acquire we will build a preschool for the children of the village, KaPhunga.

Sterile Feral

Currently, in Winnemucca Nevada, there are colonies of feral cats living throughout the city. The animal shelter in the area will only take dogs due to the amount of wild cats and difficulty in finding homes for them. These cats spread disease and often live in near starving and inhumane conditions. Without change, these cats will continue to breed and the population will continue to grow exponentially.

The Daytona Playhouse

For many years now, The Daytona Beach area has been immersed in expensive tourist traps that were meant to boost the economy. Unfortunatley, over time, this has not been successful, and the locals have had to face their fair share of let downs financially. The Daytona Playhouse gives the community an opportunity to overlook this in their lives and allows them to be apart of something wether they are in the audience, behined the scenes, or on stage providing laughter to the fellow community members that have fallen under hard times.

Teen Summer Service Project

This, the first, chapter of TSSP, would be in Baton Rouge, LA. Service projects would range from Random Acts of Kindness (RAK, see below) to fundraising to awareness campaigns to hands-on service. Causes would be decided by members on a weekly basis.

Environmental Education Through Schools

I am a Peace Corps Volunteer in Trusesti, Romania teaching at a K-8th school. I am searching for help with a project to increase awareness and education about the environment. In my community, streets and sewage systems are filled with garbage, plastic is overused then burned and recycling is not a common practice. Even today the effects of an industrial communist regime can be seen by the low priority given to the environment and lack of understanding the consequences of ones actions in relation to the environment.
