Care Packs

Project Description

This project involves the creation of "Care Packs," which will be bags filled with essential toiletry items for the elderly in teh assistance programs of a Trenton-area charity. Many do not have the essential tools to take care of themselves, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, brushes, combs, hair dryers, soap, shampoo, etc., and often times they feel that they are forgotten. This project will provide them with these products, while at the same time letting them know that there are people who care about them.

Oragami at the Willows Retirement Community

Project Description

During the 3 week Japanese Homestay Program I arranged for the Japanese girls to visit the Willows Retirement Community. While they were there they sang songs and taught the residents how to do oragami. The were engaged in conversation, talking about Japan and listening to the elderly talk about their lives. This was a time that enabled senior citizens, who might not otherwise have the opportunity, to experience Japanese culture. It was an activity that stimulated the senior citizens mentally and physically. It allowed them to think in a way that they would not normally be able to do.

Adopt Autumn Oaks

Project Description

Fifth-grade D.A.R.E. students at Slinger Elementary are building community assets and resistance skills by adopting the local senior home, Autumn Oaks. This service-learning project will involve interviewing seniors during American history unit, making door-hanging crafts, raking leaves, writing letters to seniors' families, and reading to seniors. Students will socialize with seniors to build connections, promote intergenerational skills, and improve self-worth.

Project Description

Our club collected small toiletry and gift items for seniors, packaged them in homemade May Baskets, wrote personal notes to the seniors, and distributed them to senior citizens at the Tabor Hills Nursing Home.
