We are trying to help the Darfurian refugees and victims. Our money goes to World Vision's humanitarian aid program in Darfur. Last year we raised $4,700 and this year's total is still being calculated as we are still fundraising.

I plan to help the over one-million Darfurian refugees who have been forced to flee because of the genocide there. I also hope to bring a sharp awareness of this horrific, still-occuring event to the minds of political figures. I recgnize that aid to refugees is not a full solution to the genocide problem, but it will ease the suffering and transtion of many people.

I started a chapter of Amnesty International at my high school last year. Our first fundraiser raised over $2500, and extended throughout the holiday season of 2006-2007. I wrote a letter that was distributed to my entire school, both faculty and students, asking for donations in lieu of a gift, in such a time of generosity and prosperity. We earmarked the funds for Darfur, and researched organizations that were most effective in their budgeting and utilization of money; we donated to CARE, Doctors Without Borders, and UNICEF.

I started a club at my school called STAND to raise funds and awareness about the genocide in Darfur. We are going to send 90% of our proceeds to the Dollars for Darfur campaign. On May 24th we are having a benefit to raise money for Dollars for Darfur. There will be live bands, a short film, a speaker, food, and vendors.

George Clooney met with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown (left) in London yesterday, as he continued urging governments to speak out about China's foreign policy in Sudan. China is a major trading partner with Sudan, and Beijing has resisted United Nations efforts to force Sudan to accept U.N. peacekeepers in Darfur.

AFA Benefit Concert

Inglemoor High School's clubs, Project Darfur and Amani (Peace) for Africa (AFA) are joining together to put on a benefit concert this May. The profits from the concert will benefit World Vision, and their work along with giving aid to a school in Tanzania. The concert will take place on May 30th, at El Corazon in Seattle. Band that have already committed are local groups, including Wimbleweather.

I'm going to invite kids from my community to be apart of a talent show (Entry fee of 5 dollars). Everyone from the community will be invited. Entrance fee will be 3 dollars a person, and all profits will go to the "Save Darfur" organization. It will be a night full of music, singing, acting, poetry reading, and who knows what else. I can't wait. Oh, and we're doing it at a local coffee shop.
