Play Around The Circus Playground!!

Arroyo Seco is a small town in mountains of Northern New Mexico. In recent years, the town elementary school has closed, leaving the community children with out a park, playground, or play space. We are raising money to build a circus themed children's play space and community mural next to the Seco Pearl Teahouse and Community Garden. The playground will house two trapeze bars, a safe-style tightrope, a few swings, and a huge play box with hula hoops, juggling balls, costumes, puppets, roli-bolis and more.

A Horse's Friend

A Horse's Friend is a program that allows inner-city children and adolescents the opportunity to learn respect, responsibility, and decision making skills by working with horses. Not only do participants learn how to feed, groom, and tack horses, but they also get the opportunity to ride. What a great opportunity for kids who otherwise might not ever ride a horse! After the initial sessions, kids are invited back to work as mentors to their peers thereby creating an even greater sense of responsibility and accomplishment.

"The Creation" - A teen center rock band

My project is to start a rock band at the Dover Teen Center. The Dover Teen Center is a small but influential after school program free to all Dover, NH, Jr. High and High School students from the hours of 2:30pm-6pm. I am a Community Development major at the University of New Hampshire and for my internship last semester I choose the Teen Center to become a mentor to youth (a majority are at-risk) ages 11-18.

New Beginnings

Due to Louisville's large federal refugee resettlement program, there is a constant influx of refugees. Approximately seven percent of America's immigrants are refugees, while Louisville's share is almost twice the national at 15 percent. As victims of trauma, refugee youth need guidance and direction. Some children, however, need extra support due to their exceptionally difficult past. New Beginnings, a mentoring program supported by Kentucky Refugee Ministries, will provide extra support to youth in need.

Girls in the Lead; Emotional Health and Violence-Prevention Programming for At-Risk Girls

I had worked in the field of adolescent psychology the year prior to my freshmen year at college, collaborating with members of the Empower Program and the Ophelia Project- both leading girls’ advocacy organizations- at the Girls Leadership Institute. I worked as a counselor in Washington, DC at the Girls Leadership Institute, a residential program that assisted at-risk adolescent females who had been victims of harassment or bullying at their schools.

Carnegie United Towards Increasing Efforts in Service

Carnegie United Towards Increasing Efforts in Service (CUTIES) is planning to make a difference and change our surrounding community. Carnegie Mellon students are not known for their social awareness, because we often have to focus on our rigorous academic curriculum. CUTIES aims to change this paradigm by providing students a forum to actively integrate social awareness and community service into their outstanding education. Our primary objective is to get Carnegie Mellon students making an active difference in the community.
