I am going to solve the problem of Type 1 Diabetes. There are 23.6 million people in the United States, or 8% of the population, who have diabetes. The total prevalence of diabetes increased 13.5% from 2005-2007. Only 24% of diabetes is undiagnosed, down from 30% in 2005 and from 50% ten years ago. My name is Bobby Chajson, and I am a junior at Fox Chapel Area High School, in Pittsburgh, PA. This past year, I have undertaken a project involving Juvenile Diabetes. Recently, a very close family friend of mine, Rachel Tobin (age 14), was diagnosed with type 1 Juvenile Diabetes. Rachel started an organization called Designs for a Cure, through which she designs and sells bracelets to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Cause Week

We started a cause week in our school to raise money for five different causes, Parkinson’s disease, Diabetes, AIDS, Alzheimer’s, and Cancer. To raise money for each cause we dedicated each day to a cause. Every day during third period we would go around to each classroom to inform the class of the cause we were helping that day and asked people to give donations. We set a color for each cause and on the day of that cause the students were encouraged to wear those colors.

My mom and I make glass beaded bracelets to raise awareness and money for Dr. Ben Carson's Angels in the Operating Room. (he operates on kids overseas who can't afford to pay him for supplies)I personally hold this very close to heart, because Dr. Carson saved my life in 2006. I have a Chiari Type 1 malformation and had I not gotten the surgery I probably would be blind, paralyzed and possibly dead if hit in the right spot in the back of my neck where my brain tonsils are exposed.
