AIDS

AIDS virus decades older than thought

The AIDS virus has been circulating among people for about 100 years, decades longer than scientists had thought, a new study suggests.

Genetic analysis pushes the estimated origin of HIV back to between 1884 and 1924, with a more focused estimate at 1908. Previously, scientists had estimated the origin at around 1930. AIDS wasn’t recognized formally until 1981 when it got the attention of public health officials in the United States.

Protect and Educate - Condoms to Africa!

Well over 3/4 of the AIDS cases in the world are in sub-Saharan Africa, in countries like Kenya. The people have come to believe "wives tales" such as using a condom won't prevent AIDS because the virus slips through tiny holes in condoms. Due to such stories, many, many people don't protect themselves at all!

Village Care- A trip to Africa

I will be going to Tanzania for two weeks with Village Care International to educate the community on HIV and AIDs and also to help orphaned children. We will be helping communities understand healthy living practices and spending time with the children orphaned due to AIDS.

Project Amani

The Amani Baby Cottage is home to over 50 children age 0-5 years old who have been orphanged due to AIDS or other extreme factors. ABC, located in Jinja, Uganda, is an orphanage run almost entirely by volunteers and the support of individual donors. Since Amani opened in 2003 they have had 131 children come through their doors. 48 of those children have been either reunited with extended family or placed in foster homes. 12 of the children have been placed in another ministry house (they can only stay until they are 5).

Children In Need

Mama Tina’s Resource Center seeks to meet the needs of impoverished children who have been orphaned or abandoned because of a variety of uncontrollable circumstances in Kisumu, Kenya. Mama Tina provides basic needs (food, shelter, education and health care) to these children.

Spooktacular for UNICEF

This October, the Key Club of Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, Arizona, will host its second annual "Spooktacular for UNICEF," a Halloween-themed carnival that will raise money for UNICEF's service intiative, the Swazi Children Care Project. It is common knowledge that the HIV/AIDS epidemic has thoroughly devastated the continent of Africa. However, in the small African nation of Swaziland, the disease and its consequences have been incredibly catastrophic. Life expectancy in Swaziland is currently 27 years of age.

Friends of Kakamega

Helping AIDS orphans in Kenya! Friends of Kakamega is a non-profit, Quaker organization that is based in Freeport, Maine. Its purpose is to support and nurture the AIDS orphanage in Kakamega, Kenya, which was started by the Quaker women there. Each year a group of 10 Americans (they are not all Quakers) travels to Kakamega to run a summer camp for the 40 children who live at the orphanage, and another 60 who come for a meal every day. This year the trip's focus is going to be helping and healing the children.

Africa Dream Project

The Mission of Africa Dream Project is to construct the first full International Baccalaureate high school in the area, collaborate with top universities around the world, and equip Kibera's next generation of leaders to transform the slum into a healthy, vibrant community. By empowering its future leaders with a world-class education AND empowering its current residents with micro-enterprise programs, we plan to Kibera transform into a health, vibrant community.

Epoch

I have started creating t-shirts that raise awareness of world causes. Two shirts have been designed and are currently being sold. One for the sexual exploitation of children and one for child soldiers. Three more will be created. On the backs of the shirts there is a paragraph of shocking statistics and facts about the cause and it always ends with "Be a part of something bigger than yourself." On the front is a design. Students from my school have drawn the designs for the t-shirts. The shirts are sold for 20 dollars and the proceeds go to World Vision.
