Creative Kitchen

It is difficult for children today to make the right choices when it comes to healthy eating, especially in an urban setting. Just down the street from our elementary school are two pizza shops, a McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Simply walking home from school in need of a snack will undoubtedly tempt them to eat something with high fat content and little nutritional value. Many parents are uneducated about proper nutrition and pass along poor eating habits to their children. When picking a child up from school, it is all too easy to cruise through the drive-in window.

Team Robinson Fitness' goal is to provide a professional staff dedicated to helping youth, the citizens of Sumter, and surrounding communities in improving positive character developments by providing fitness and overall health awareness. As youth become more involved with fitness activities, it is more evident than ever, that less violence will occur, positive skill training and self confidence will develop, and obesity will drop tremendously.

The need is for at-risk young girls to be connected and see positive images of women, so they don’t get pregnant, drop out of school or become a victim of the street. Our core issues are teen pregnancy, violence, and self-esteem. We promote self-love, self-respect and self-determination. The focus this year for You Go Girl Go is health and fitness.

Basic Rights to Health Project

Upon learning of the Do Something Grant, I knew instantly I wanted to apply and take advantage of this opportunity. I am very passionate about international development issues and challenges (especially those regarding the broad fields of health, education/awareness, and basic needs such as food safety and sanitation). I feel that I would be a valuable applicant for a grant due to my diverse skills, experiences, and achievements. I am involved with numerous leadership activities, such as being an Executive Member of the Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) at the University of Ottawa.

Health Advocacy Program (HAP)

Background : Currently there is a health crisis facing our country’s youth. Poor health habits in diet and exercise are contributing to a rising trend in obesity that increases the risk for cardiovascular disease and threatens to seriously shorten life expectancy. Moreover, there is growing evidence that the burden of disease falls disproportionately on both minorities and the economically poor.
