See It: The Community being helped
To a certain extent, there is a hierarchy in the publishing world between literary magazines and the book publishing industry. Writers are expected to first seek publication of short stories before they “progress” to publishing a novel. At the same time, however, there are few opportunities for young adult writers to publish their work; there are few literary magazines that actively seek new writers and even fewer that seek young writers.
The purpose of Absynthe Muse as a Web site is to provide free services for young adult writers to help them better their craft and enter the publishing world. As a resource of Absynthe Muse, the Absynthe Muse Review aims to publish only young adult writers and thus is unique among literary magazines.
The Absynthe Muse Review will provide services to young adult writers in the following ways:
Only publish material created by young adults. The magazine defines young adults as under the age of 25.
Provide feedback on all submissions received. The Absynthe Muse Review will never send out form rejection letters, but will strive to provide useful, encouraging, and educational feedback for all contributors.
Collaborate with accepted writers to edit submissions. The AMR staff will work with writers to take them through the process of editing a piece for publication with the aim of familiarizing the writers with what other magazines will expect of them.
Provide a competitive level of payment to contributors. AMR will always pay its contributors as much as its budget allows to both encourage young writers to submit to AMR rather than a non-paying market and to reward them for their work.
Include contributor’s bios and pictures in each issue and on the AMR Web site. AMR will retain a great respect for the writers behind each work and will include bios and pictures to promote the writers and artists it features.
