The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes cares for over 800 children with diabetes from Western New York and Northeastern Pennsylvania. This condition is unlike any other in that families are asked to master a voluminous amount of information during a short hospitilzation after their child has been diagnosed with a serious, chronic condition. They are then required to go home and apply this information in order to keep their child healthy.

I wrote an essay at the beginning of senior year which I am submitting as my description due to the fact that it describes my efforts and ambitions quite well.

“This happens all the time; it’s no big deal, Amani. Just ignore them. If you look the other way, they’ll leave us alone.” I glanced down from the chairlift to the children underneath me in the snow. Barely being able to fathom what my uncle had just told me, I just sat there.

I have been working to raise money to purchase books and DVDs for teenagers in the pediatrics ward at my local hospital. My focus is teenagers because most people think of young children in the pediatrics ward, not preteens and teens. Hopefully I'll be able to move on to more hospitals after this one.
