Project Description

My project is a 12'x 25' observation blind in our community nature refuge. It will have one-way glass so nature can be observed clearly without disrupting the normal activity of the birds, etc. The blind will have picnic tables so that local school can bring classes of students in for lessons on conservation, ecology, birds, nature, etc. It will also be open at all times to the community.

I have begun building the blind, but still need funds for the glass and storage bins for seed, etc.

Project Description

I am a Boy Scout in Troop 99. For my Eagle Project I looked for something that I had an interest in that would also help the community. I really like animals and fully support adopting animals from shelters. I contacted my local SPCA and asked if they had any projects or services that needed to be done. They told me that they were looking for someone to build 20 Screech Owl Nesting Boxes. I had to find dimensions and instructions on my own.
I have chosen to use cedar wood as it would have the longest life and would impact the community decades from now. Although this greatly increases the costs, it is well worth the extra money.
My troop will be placing 5 of the boxes near our Scout House so we can enjoy the project we have completed. The remaining 15 will be given to the SPCA to be located where ever they choose.
The Screech Owl is a strictly nocturnal animal that needs enclosed sheltering during the day while it sleeps. It's preferred habitats are trees bordering flat plains. They will nest inside the burrows of these trees. Due to the destruction of their environment by construction, the Screech Owls are running out of places to nest. Some try to nest in local business buildings. This is bad for both the business and the owl. This is not the owl's natural environment. Also, nests in the buildings of the affected business's is unsightly and deters clients and business.
Hopefully the construction of these 20 Nesting Boxes will provide Screech Owls with a place to sleep during the day and eat their meals at night. Businesses will also notice a difference as some Screech Owls will leave and nest in the Nesting Boxes. If the SPCA puts these boxes up in parks, citizens can enjoy sighting the occasional Screech Owl peeping its head out during the day. These Nesting Boxes will have a profound impact on my community and environment.
