See It: The Community being helped
Street Project
In May 2007, a small group of high school students got together to propose a civic action project to be presented as a play the following spring. What was born was the Street Project.
The Street Project is a holistic look at the people, systems, and opinions that surround youth homelessness in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. We are researching the family dynamics that lead to homelessness, the support given to homeless youth, the politics of youth homelessness, and the effect of homelessness on the young GLBT community among other issues. The ultimate goal of the project is to compile a play that compellingly and respectfully addresses youth homelessness based on our gathered information. This is a three-step process:
1) Gather data, articles, and most importantly interviews that express multiple viewpoints on youth homelessness. We have interviewed homeless youth, social workers, teachers, parents, and state politicians.
2) Distill information into cohesive stories, focusing on key stories and perspectives but maintaining a broad scope.
3) Using the information to write a play.
The final result will probably resemble the interview-based format of "The Laramie Project," the play that was based on the murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. However, the play's shape won't be certain until enough interviews and other research has been gathered.
