Gay marriage banned in several states: What now?

Thousands of married gay couples are now in legal limbo after California voters approved Proposition 8 by a slim 4% margin. About 18,000 couples held their nuptials during the short time that gay marriage was legal this year but now it is unclear whether their union will be recognized by California law despite affirmations from the state attorney general, Jerry Brown, that those marriages will remain valid.

In 1999, Terrol Dew Johnson won a BRICK Award for his work with Tohono O'Odham Community Action, which he co-founded. Through the creation of a basket-weaver's marketing cooperative, a youth-elder program, a family garden initiative and a charter high school, Terrol is working to promote sustainable community development, cultural revitalization and educational success for the Tohono O'Odham Nation in Southern Arizona.
