See It: The Community being helped
The Luling ISD and Community Marathon Challenge is a first annual fitness challenge to bring the students, parents, staff, and community members together to help make them more aware of and improve their fitness level. As a result of SB 530, all students, in grades 3-12 will be assessed on their physical fitness. In grades 3-7, in Luling ISD, an average of 12% of the total number of students were 'above average in weight,' for their age. Research shows that students who are physically active have improved behavior, attention and focus; as a result, improved academics. It would be exciting to see our school and community come together and get moving toward a common goal to have strong minds, bodies and souls. With this in mind, I propose the following:
- Students, Parents, Teachers, Staff, Community Members, School Board Members will all be encouraged to sign up for the First Annual Luling Marathon Challenge.
- Over a five month period, all participants would log their running/walking miles on a weekly log.
- After they accumulated 26 total miles, they would complete their marathon as a community at the Marathon Celebration, at which time everybody would run .2 miles as a group.
- Weekly logs will be submitted to the Marathon Station.
- All logs must be verified by an adult. It is on the honor system
- 26 total miles will be logged before the celebration.
- Prizes will be distributed as a drawing at the celebration.
- There will also be drawings for different categories.
- Parents and students will be encouraged to exercise as a family
- Businesses will be encouraged to participate as a group.
- Faculty will be encouraged to participate as a group.
- Schools will be encouraged to participate as a group.
- Classes will be encouraged to participate as a group.
- Curriculums can be developed based on this.
- Physical Education classes can incorporate it into their curriculum.
Everyone will benefit from this. This is a great opportunity for teaching our students how to set goals and achieve them. Adults can be great role models for our students. Let’s start now to make a positive change in our community.
