Saturday Activity Sessions at Rice University

PAIR (Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refuges) is a Rice student-led nonprofit organization that coordinates a number of educational programs that benefit the refugee community in greater Houston, Texas. The Saturday Activity Sessions are weekly ESL games, activities, and academic exercises conducted by Rice undergraduate student volunteers for refugee students aged 6-19.

Video Game Club

The Video Game Club is a group focused on giving the youth of a lower income community the chance to have a safe alternative in the evening. The group will meet once a week in the leasing office of the community. The evening will consist of a life skills building activity and then the youth will be able to compete in video games on teams and against eachother. The gaming time will help the youth build self confidence, self worth and help them develop skills in conflict resolution.

Care Packs

This project involves the creation of "Care Packs," which will be bags filled with essential toiletry items for the elderly in teh assistance programs of a Trenton-area charity. Many do not have the essential tools to take care of themselves, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, brushes, combs, hair dryers, soap, shampoo, etc., and often times they feel that they are forgotten. This project will provide them with these products, while at the same time letting them know that there are people who care about them.

House of Hope of Ocean County, Inc.

I am currently volunteering at a brand new community resource home titled the House of Hope. The House of Hope of Ocean County, Inc. is a non-profit, interfaith organization which assists individuals and families achieve and sustain self-sufficiency.

Live Oak Wrestling Club

The Live Oak Wrestling club is a creation of a newer and brighter opportunity for students in 6th to 12th grade. The sport of wrestling is growing in the area and this gives them an opportunity to join a sport which can mentally and physically prepare them for life. It is one of only three programs like this in the city area and provides the experience needed with 5 coaches and enough experience to give any child the chance to excel.

The mission of Jer's Vision: Canada's Youth Diversity Initiative (the Jeremy Dias Foundation) is to support youth who are addressing issues of discrimination in their schools and communities. Discrimination is still a major problem in Canada, and youth are part of the solution. The potential of youth is all too often overlooked, and we want to change that.

Dodge Literacy Magnet School Book Drive

To promote literacy in our community, students in our school were asked to donate "gently used" children's books. The books are being donated to several agencies in our area, including Red Cross, Inter-Faith Ministries, the Wichita Children's Home, and Catholic Charities, so that children in need will have books to read. Besides helping the environment by recycling these books, students who donated were also assisting children in our community who have been affected by poverty in such a way that they do not have access to children's books away from school.

Lobo Fund

This is a newly created student run charity organization designed to support students in need at our high school. We are the only student based resource available to persons in our school community who are in need. The fund is designed to provide financial aid for various reasons ranging from school supplies to doctors visits. We are seeking seed money to begin this new tradition and help our community.
