Save A Teen / Do Something

Kids Off The Block, a prominent community based youth organization in the Roseland Community of Chicago, IL, has ignited a passion across the city in response to an epidemic of youth violence that has claimed the lives of our children in the past year. We are embarking on our greatest challenge yet, the launching of our Citywide Campaign called “Save A Teen / Do Something”. This new Youth Anti-Violence Crime Prevention Campaign will develop sustainable processes and relationships that will address the violence, and social conditions that face youth in Chicago and across this nation.

Culture in Motion

New Haven is a city where people are judged by the hood they represent. It is a place that, based on its history, was founded by violence, and descriminations whine in my ears like gunshots, for which there are plenty to go around here. School events are even cancelled to supposedly eradicate the tensions between violent teenagers. These restrictions, as well as the attitudes displayed by the students, make peace nearly impossible.

Improving What We Know About School Safety

The School Safety Research Group (SSRG) is a new non-profit organization devoted to the advancement and dissemination of school safety research and information. The SSRG was created and is chaired by Matt Buckman, 25 years old. The organization has just launched their website (www.aboutschoolsafety.com). Overtime this website will become a source for free resources for those interested in advancing the area of school safety through research.

American Students against bullying

I am going to start a School violence awarness campaign at my school. It will be a week of learning about bullying and harrasment and how to stop theses things. Ultimately I will talk to people at Students Against Violence Everywhere and see about getting a speaker to come to our school and talk about these things. I will also extend out to the community by advertising this to the entire community so that people will be able to fight the bullying and abuse that goes on in our schools.

Urban to Virtual; Responses to Street Violence in Rio de Janeiro

Urban to Virtual; Responses to Exclusionary Designs in Public Space in Rio de Janeiro Fear of urban violence is shown in the literature to be a tool for sustaining exclusionary designs in public spaces. The work will identify the relationship between participation in virtual worlds and urban violence as challenges to the physical segregations in city life. The goal of the work is to finance programs of participation in virtual worlds that result in a non-violent and effective response to segregated urban environments.

Affecting Youth Culture

While the cause I chose is only a piece of the puzzle, it is a big piece. Teens in America are facing challenges that no other generation before them has faced. The media has set up programming that will coerce them into certain attitudes and lifestyle choices from the time they are young. For example, what they wear, moral authority, relationship choices, violence, etc. My desire is to give them an alternative to being raised by the media and bringing the hearts of the children back to the parents and visa versa.

Books & Peace

The description of this project to decrease the amount of school violence inside the community. I was a student of the private school system for twelve years of my education career. I have not just seen fights between classmates, but fights and riots between whole schools. The foundation of the project is to show kids how to communicate with each other without resolving to violence.

Anti-Bullying

In my junior year I was chosen to be a part of starting an anti-bullying program at Pembroke High School. We met every few weeks with Bridgewater State College students to discuss our school's problems and things we could do to resolve them. The program continues to be successful in helping students and improving our school.
