See It: The Community being helped
This is my plan for our college community to help prevent the increasing rates of obesity in minorities, junk food living with college students and the perception that females have on their body image and how healthy eating can help prevent such physical and mental distasters.
As a senior student attending Norfolk State University in the year 2008 i would like to implement a plan to help decrease the number of female minorities that are suffering from obesity and depression. It is a proven fact that the obesity rate as well as the depression rate is increasing in america and this burden largly falls on that of americas minorities (who are greatly responsible for this statistic). The leading factor in our comminity that has students suffering from depression is body image. Females account for more than half of the student body suffering from depression and eating disorders. I have witnessed countless females during my college years at Norfolk State suffer from many eating disorders and body weight issues, not to mention bad eating habits. As a student-athelte time management is hard and many times our body ended up suffering because of such.
At this Historically Black College/University (HBCU) i have the opportunity to join a sisterhood. This is more commonly known as a soroioty. In order to join there is a process. This grant would not olny help me perfect the application process, but it would also give me the power to mobilize a prestegious group of females that are well respected to promote healthy lifestyles. As a sisterhood we can use our entrepreneurial skills to create many programs that can be embeded into the school system for many generations to come. As a perk to joining this internationally based sisterhood i will be able to reach not only people in our school and community but people all over the world! This plan to defeat obesity and depression will be done in many forms: Seminars, workshops, activity days, events, sports, literature, the arts, and the business world. Our main goal and object will be to Do Something!
