Creative Kitchen

It is difficult for children today to make the right choices when it comes to healthy eating, especially in an urban setting. Just down the street from our elementary school are two pizza shops, a McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Simply walking home from school in need of a snack will undoubtedly tempt them to eat something with high fat content and little nutritional value. Many parents are uneducated about proper nutrition and pass along poor eating habits to their children. When picking a child up from school, it is all too easy to cruise through the drive-in window.

"Real Strong"

The area of Pinellas Park and surrounding St. Petersburg, FL is challenged with problems of poverty, single-parent households with no support, high incidences of substance abuse and lack of guidance for many of our youth. As a teacher, I see the difference that guidance and listening can make to an adolescent girl. I also see that there is a huge need for our young women to nurture and respect themselves through healthy body image, self-confidence and a positive attitude!

WIN-WIN (Weight Initiative Now) at the South End Community Health Center

Background: Childhood overweight and obesity has developed into such an epidemic in the United States that national health organizations such as the Institute of Medicine, Food and Nutrition Board, and Board on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention have termed it a national public health priority and a critical public health threat. According to the Institute of Medicine’s September 2006 Report Brief, one third of American children and youth are either obese or at risk of becoming obese.

Health Advocacy Program (HAP)

Background : Currently there is a health crisis facing our country’s youth. Poor health habits in diet and exercise are contributing to a rising trend in obesity that increases the risk for cardiovascular disease and threatens to seriously shorten life expectancy. Moreover, there is growing evidence that the burden of disease falls disproportionately on both minorities and the economically poor.

Youth Fitness and Nutrition Expedition

Fannin County in Texas is a limited-resource county. Therefore, subjects such as health, fitness, and nutrition are not considered priorities and many youth are not exposed to these subjects on a continuous basis. Youth Fitness and Nutrition Expedition is for youth 7-18, and consists of 30 sessions, once a week. Each sessions consists of a 20 minute lesson on a fitness, nutrition, health, or community service topic, followed by an hour of physical activity. Physical activity focuses on running, walking, resistance training, teamwork, and active games (such as relays).

Nutrition Intuition

Nutrition Intuition is a non-profit health awareness program that aims to educate the community about the beneficial effects of drinking more water and living a healthy, active lifestyle. I conceived the idea for Nutrition Intuition in July 2006 at the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF), where it won first place in the Public Health Symposium contest. My affiliation with Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) enabled me to gather a team of four students from my high school who offered to help.
