Science Days of Tallahassee

Our purpose here at Science Days is to provide female middle school students an after-school program which focuses on science and mathematics. Females, especially minorities, are under-represented in many higher learning institutions majoring in science and mathematics. The future of the world will be placed upon the shoulders of our future engineers, scientists, mathematicians, etc. The current and potential problems that the world will face within the next decade will directly affect this generation.

St. Olaf College STI Testing Day

As members of the student-run Gender and Sexuality Center at St. Olaf College, we are organizing a campus-wide STI Testing Day on April 11th which will offer free, confidential access to HIV and Chlamydia testing to as many students, faculty and staff as possible, depending upon the successfulness of obtaining public and private grants and funding. Currently, testing offered through the college health service is expensive for students without insurance, and not confidential for those students choosing to pay with insurance.

Becoming the Tigress: Stopping Domestic Violence and Bringing Awareness to Women

I will be holding a free women's self defense seminar for my community. I have created an awareness lesson, including what attackers look for, current statistics, and how to avoid becoming a victim. After that, I will be teaching the essentials of martial arts to not only survive an attack but to avoid one altogether. I will also be adamantly selling raffle tickets, and the proceeds will be going to a local domestic violence center that is in desperate need of donations. However, I am finding difficulties getting donations myself to buy items for the raffle.

America's War on Obesity!

Ok this is strange how this came to me. Everyday I watch some sort of television. On nearly every channel you see commercials, news briefs, educational programs, food, ect. I at first never paid any attention to this. I watched the celebrities shrink before my eyes and thought "Yea, if I had a million dollars I would be able to afford Jenny Craig and a personal trainer to." But recently I had started nursing school. One of my favorite subjects I have been recently studying is nutrition. It is astounding what you learn about diets truely. I decided to live better.

Cafeteria Friends Promise

This is going to be a very in depth thing, though the day that it happens may not seem that hard to set up, but the ideas behind the event are important. It starts with myself, and any other recruits that I have helping myself in the cafeteria of my school, hosting 3500 students of more. You walk into the doorway of the cafeteria, or any of them being that there are numerous, and immediately you look down and see 16 paper-cut outs of bodies taped to the ground, representing the 16 teenagers that die everyday from automobile related accidents.
