Special Olympics Youth Program

I am a 19 year old college freshman currently attending Alma College. I am an International Business Major and a Pre-Law Student.
My project relates to the Special Olympic Basketball Program. This year when I got to college, I got involved with the Area 7 district. We had a successful year with 2 teams from Gratiot County. Our varsity team even won the regional championship in March.

Charity Powder Puff Games

This year, we held our first annual Charity Powder Puff Game. As captain of my school’s cheerleading squad, we collaborated with our rival school to have our two cheerleading teams play each other in a game of basketball. We sold tickets competitively so that for every 10 tickets the squad sold ($40), the squad gained 2 bonus points. I was able to organize the even so that everyone’s time was donated (announcers, chaperones, ticket sellers, referees…). On top of that, we sold concessions in exchange for donations.

Kids-n-Sports

Kids-n-Sports is something that teenagers can help kids in their community. There are many sports to choose from, but I am mainly talking about basketball. If you want to get more specific Upward Basketball. If teenagers of today would get involved with the younger kids in their community, so many kids would grow up and not be involved with all of whats wrong with today.

Cause Week

We started a cause week in our school to raise money for five different causes, Parkinson’s disease, Diabetes, AIDS, Alzheimer’s, and Cancer. To raise money for each cause we dedicated each day to a cause. Every day during third period we would go around to each classroom to inform the class of the cause we were helping that day and asked people to give donations. We set a color for each cause and on the day of that cause the students were encouraged to wear those colors.

Nothing But Net

We are holding a 3 on 3 basketball tournament at our community center to raise money and awareness for Nothing But Nets, a nonprofit organization that buys bed nets for families in Africa in order to combat malaria. We chose to raise money for this cause because it is a preventable disease, yet kills thousands of people every day. The tournament will bring the community together by getting multiple age groups to participate. The format of the tournament will allow all teams to be guaranteed four games and then an opportunity to play for the championship.

RBYA: RANCHWOOD BASKETBALL YOUTH ASSOCIATION

THE RBYA: RANCHWOOD BASKETBALL YOUTH ASSOCIATION IS A PROGRAM WHICH PROVIDES FITNESS, POSITIVE MOTIVATION, AND OVERALL STRUCTURE TO LOW-INCOME, DROPOUT, GANG ORIENTED, AND TROUBLED YOUTHS. THE RBYA MEETS EVERY SATURDAY MORNING. MEETINGS BEGIN WITH TEAM BUILDING EXERCISES AND MOTIVATIONAL STORIES. FUNDAMENTAL BASKTBALL DRILLS ARE THEN COORDINATED. STUDENTS ARE THEN DIVIDED INTO TEAMS FOR FITNESS DEVELOPMENT AND PRACTICE. THIS ALLOWS YOUTHS TO LEARN TEAM AND CO-WORK THEORIES AS WELL AS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN ORGANIZED SPORTS.

Pineview Basketball Camp

Pineview Home School in Evart, Michigan is a school for court placed boys. Some of the boys that attend this school were abused, while others have committed some type of a felony. The boys live in homes together on the campus of the school and spend the majority of their time at the school. They are allowed to participate in athletics and compete against mostly small private schools from the area. They field a soccer team and a basketball team. One of the things that I enjoyed doing most growing up was attending camps in the summer.

Boys Basketball Camp

The camp is for the local boys who are interested in learning and playing basketball. I am a Basketball coach and have noticed that the kids no longer are outside playing on the courts. This I want to bring back to my small town, because I remember being a young student and my parents would have to drag me inside at night. The camp ideal is to allow the kids to play five on five basketball. They will also have contest. Each camper who places 1st, 2nd or 3rd will be awarded trophies. The kids also get camp tee-shirts as well as a big pizza party on the last day of camp.
