Lose dont get lost

I want to start a program for kids who have low self-esteem because of their weight problems. I recently lost 50 pounds and it was hard for me to adjust to the comments of friends, family and peers. All of the sudden people start being really nice to you and giving extra attention; it becomes difficult to see who in your life is real and has loved you heavy or light. This program will be similar to those of weight loss programs, except that it will be the after-care program because this is what clinics fail to provide.

Thanksgiving Bliss

I am a bit convicted at the fact that as I describe this "Healthy Eating" Project, there is the remainder of a hearty pumpkin pie with traces of whip cream and all, sitting on a tidy little dish upon my desk. But that's okay... Thanksgiving is just around the corner, right? :) As I share about this project, do not be mistaken by my hypocrisy. I am preaching to myself as much as I preach a healthy lifestyle to the average American. Hence, the theme of my project titled, "Thanksgiving Bliss".

1000 Mile Relay

Ailis, my sister, traveled to the country of Lesotho in the summer of 2005. After her interactions with the children in the Touching Tiny Lives Foundation’s safe home, she vividly described the stories she discovered during her time. These children are either orphaned because their parents passed away from AIDS or are stricken with the disease itself. My brother and I decided it was time to act and we could not and would not remain silent.

Teens and Healthy Eating: How to Make Healthy Food for Yourself

This project would be to create a magazine for teens that emphasized the importance of eating right and being healthy, and how to create food and an exercise plan for yourself to fulfill your goals.

Burrito Run

Everyone loves to eat and eating gives you energy to exercise. Do both in the same minute and you get an interesting relay race. The Zeta Psi Fraternity at the University of Michigan is going to be putting on the first U of M Burrito Relay. Teams of 4 will run a lap, eat a burrito as fast as they can then run another lap around where, upon finishing, they will pass of a baton. This will continue until the last contestant has made it around the track.

Strong Women, Strong Girls

2005 BRICK Award winner Lindsay Hyde overcame an eating disorder and started a group, Strong Women, Strong Girls, which incorporated into a not-for-profit agency in 2004.  The group focuses on helping young girls with their self-esteem. She created a curriculum to train college women to mentor elementary school girls. These programs help at-risk girls in grades 3-5 to strengthen their self-esteem and learn skills to help them as adults.
