Many students and people in our community are unaware of the problems and lack of privileges a disabled person endures. Among the most marginalized of citizens in the United States and other leading industrial nations, a large proportion of disabled are impoverished and unemployed. We want to advocate for the attention to be redirected. No longer should the disabled be discriminated on the basis of medical impairment but attention should now be focused upon changing the social-political issues that underpin disability oppression.

Recently having watched my beloved dog, Daisy, get hit by an oncoming truck after she managed to coerce herself out of her collar, I have been made aware of the pain and suffering that not only accompanies the owner of a dog that needs emergency medical help, but the veterinary bill, for said canine, as well. Being a relatively accident-free person, myself, I have really not encountered the ongoing and debated problem of health care costs in America; thus, it was news to me that it had engulfed veterinary medical assistance, as well.

Local Euphoria 2008

It is being held at the Curtain Club ad the Liquid Lounge simulatiously, on April 26, 2008. We're having local bands to play the event for free, and all the proceeds go to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. www.lls.org

Harvard College Alliance for Africa

Harvard College Alliance for Africa (HCAA) works with both local African partner agencies and international organizations to implement sustainable programs for education in Africa’s remote rural areas and urban slums. HCAA’s goal is to enable African communities and families to support HIV/AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children through our initiatives which will ensure the underprivileged an improved quality of life.

Funding the Community

The mission of Funding the Community is to consult student groups on fundraising and volunteerism to increase philanthropy on campus. Funding the Community will work closely with organizations to clearly outline a charitable goal towards increasing community involvement and improving fundraising.

Goals
1. To help organizations brainstorm and identify a community or charity they wish to support.
2. To help organizations create a plan. (ex. Organize an event, coordinate volunteer hours, etc.)

Charity Powder Puff Games

This year, we held our first annual Charity Powder Puff Game. As captain of my school’s cheerleading squad, we collaborated with our rival school to have our two cheerleading teams play each other in a game of basketball. We sold tickets competitively so that for every 10 tickets the squad sold ($40), the squad gained 2 bonus points. I was able to organize the even so that everyone’s time was donated (announcers, chaperones, ticket sellers, referees…). On top of that, we sold concessions in exchange for donations.

Give a Dollar, Save a Life

Give a Dollar, Save a Life started as an idea two summers ago. I wanted my family and I to sponsor a family in poverty, but I felt like that wasn't enough- there had to be a way to help more than four or five people. Instantly, my overpopulated high school came to mind. Attending a high school with 3000 kids (the second largest in CT!) can be a challenge, but it would be perfect for this project. With only one dollar from every student, we could sponsor ten children, and therefore benefit an entire community!

Change for Change

Change for Change is a campaign brought on by HERO: a UNA-USA campaign. The HERO campaign is in partnership with the USAID. It is an awareness building and fund raising initiative dedicated to providing comprehensive, school-based support to orphans and vulnerable children living in HIV/AIDS-affected communities in Africa. UNA-USA stands for the United Nations Association of the United States of America. It is a center for innovative programs to engage Americans in issues of global concern.

MLK Day of Service "Bowl for Warmth"

Students are invited to “Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off!” by attending the MLK Day of Service “Bowl for Warmth”. This event will raise money for the Community Action Agency to assist local needy with utilities costs. Norton Country Lanes will be open on Monday, January 21, from 1:00-4:00. Students will enjoy unlimited bowling with shoes included, and pizza and soda for only $10. Parents of younger students (K-5) are encouraged to bowl with their children for only $5.
