Habitat for Humanity

The first time I volunteered in my community I was not expecting any special experience or appreciation to occur. With an event such as “Habitat for Humanity”, I saw myself to slip away into the background and to be collected into the pile of pieces of volunteers being swept together to create something as extraordinary as a house. And, in fact I was. Even as a small insignificant piece to the puzzle, I had the most amazing experience making a difference. It always begins with a small person in the background.

Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia Beautification Day

On April 5, 2008 my organization, Circle K International, will collaborate with Kiwanis and K-Kids and create a beautification day for the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia. We plan to paint walls and doors, plant flowers and provide a nice landscaping, and all in all give this Sickle Cell testing center the look it should for all its free services it provides to the Metro Atlanta Community.

Not Just Any New Home

Standing in the driveway of the home they were building, the members of the University of North Alabama’s Habitat for Humanity chapter were already thinking about the next home. Next time, they decided, the home would be environmentally friendly. Now that home is in the design stage. It will be solar-powered and hopefully zero-energy, meaning that the home will use an average of no manufactured energy. The home will also incorporate energy-efficient appliances and environmentally friendly building materials.

Air Band Concert

I will be heading an air band concert at my high school, and i'm helping two other schools host an air band concert at their school. The winners will perform at the town's spring street festival and all the proceeds will go to the Habitat for Humanity of our county.

'Helping Others Help Themselves' is a community service project that benefits my local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. The local affiliate was initiated in 2006, and after discovering about it, I along with several members of my Future Business Leaders of America club wanted to get involved. I began to research ways to get started, and discovered how to initiate a Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter in my high school, which would be only the third Campus Chapter in my state.

I joined Americorps*NCCC in hopes of making a difference in my world, and especially my country after I had just graduated High School and wanted to spend my time contributing to the community through working with Habitat for Humanity. During this project I helped build 2 duplex homes -Wasco, and Borthwick - for families that were on the brink of/or were homeless.

Disaster Relief Club

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2004 myself, along with two fellow students, created the Disaster Relief Club at our high school to help generate aid to be sent for the relief effort. We held club meetings after school to propose various ways to raise money to be sent to the areas affected by the hurricanes. We developed the idea to hold a "battle of the bands" of sorts at our high school to help raise money and awareness. We asked local rock bands and musical acts to play in our school auditorium for a night of music and fun.
