Eco-kids keeping parents on their toes

Immersed in environmentalism at school, in houses of worship and even via popular culture, a growing army of “eco-kids” are holding their parents accountable at home, reports the New York Times.

“I have very, very environmentally conscious children — more so than me, I’m embarrassed to say,” said Ms. Ross, a social worker in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. “They’re on my case about getting a hybrid car. They want me to replace all the light bulbs in the house with energy-saving bulbs.”

Nonviolence Rally & Resource Fair

This rally is a much needed event at the end of the summer because statistically much of the inner city violence goes on the rise during this time. For example, during the summer of 2007, when for the entire year there were over 400 murders, especially among young men of African American decent, there were over 100 occurring during the summer months. Just this past February, a young man was gunned down across the street from a community recreation center which houses a large after school program and day care with over 100 school age youth.

Iraqi Hope By TakePride

Generation Iraq ----- Generation Iraq is one of the few Western charities still operating in Iraq. It was founded in 2006 by a remarkable woman named Tamara Quinn. Tamara is an Iraqi-American who almost immediately after the fall of Baghdad got on a plane and traveled to Iraq for the first time in 30 years to see if she could help Iraqis recover from the war and decades of oppression under Saddam Hussein. While there, Tamara co-founded a women’s rights organization, worked with the Coalition Provisional Authority, and over time, developed a special interest in assisting Iraqi children.

Karing for Kids Karnival

The House of Charity is a nonprofit organization which brings children from third world countries to the United States and houses them for a few months so they can get cheaper plastic surgery than what is availiable in their homeland. These kids have been shamed their whole lives because of their disabilities or looks. We are trying to give them a chance to a better, new life so they can feel what I feel; feel what it is to be a kid and have fun with friends and go out and enjoy life.

United States Pony Club Knowledge Flash Cards

My community is currently the Middle California Region Pony Clubs. My flash cards have been given to the regional supervisor and hopefully she will be able to distrubute them. I am still looking for an cheap and easy way to print, laminate and bind the cards so that they will last longer. The Pony Clubbers will often be studying in a barn environment and the more protected the cards are the better. I am hoping to expand my community to all the Pony Clubs in the Nation.

Community Day Playground Build

When children do not move and exercise, a variety of long-term problems arise. Obesity, lack of attention span during class, lack of ability to work as a team, lack of want to take risks. All research shows that without play, children grow up to be non-productive adults. We could not let our students be in this position, just because our playground was 12 years old, rotting, too small and as the kids say "too boring". We will ensure after this playground build that all of students are moving around during recess and after-school getting all of the benefits of PLAY!

Awaken Worldwide

•Current FACTS• An updated Oxfam report also notes the following facts (some numbers may be out of date and have gotten worse, but the sheer scale of these numbers alone are shocking): ! More than two million people are internally displaced; of these, over 50 per cent are in eastern DRC. More than one million of the displaced have received absolutely no outside assistance. ! It is estimated that up to 2.5 million people in DRC have died since the outbreak of the war, many from preventable diseases. !
