See It: The Community being helped
We started a cause week in our school to raise money for five different causes, Parkinson’s disease, Diabetes, AIDS, Alzheimer’s, and Cancer. To raise money for each cause we dedicated each day to a cause. Every day during third period we would go around to each classroom to inform the class of the cause we were helping that day and asked people to give donations. We set a color for each cause and on the day of that cause the students were encouraged to wear those colors.
Prior to the actual week of causes, those of us planning the events made bracelets with hemp string and colorful beads. Each color representing its own cause and arranged on the bracelet in order of the days the people wearing them were to wear that color of shirt. We sold these bracelets for $2.00 each. 100% of the proceeds went to the causes.
Since cancer was the cause that inspired our efforts in the first place we decided to make Friday the biggest day of the week. We had a school assembly, which much of the community attended. The main attraction was 426 inches of hair that girls at our school donated to locks for love in one assembly where they had it all cut off in front of everybody. At this assembly we also invited representatives form each targeted cause to receive checks for $1,000.00 each.
