Creative Kitchen

It is difficult for children today to make the right choices when it comes to healthy eating, especially in an urban setting. Just down the street from our elementary school are two pizza shops, a McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Simply walking home from school in need of a snack will undoubtedly tempt them to eat something with high fat content and little nutritional value. Many parents are uneducated about proper nutrition and pass along poor eating habits to their children. When picking a child up from school, it is all too easy to cruise through the drive-in window.

VoteGopher.com

“We Dig. You Decide.” That's our motto. We at VoteGopher understand that our country's future is hinged largely upon the decisions that our leaders make today. As the youth who will comprise this next generation of Americans, we have a stake in shaping that future. Every day, our elected officials face difficult choices on a range of issues, and we want to make sure that you - the American voter - know where they stand. Our writers, primarily Harvard undergraduates, have all taken a non-partisan oath.

Wii Can Help!

I work at a school on a military base in Oahu, HI. Many of my students do not get off base often, and feel disconnected from their community. After talking with local nursing homes, I have found that many of the senior citizens who reside there receive little to no visitors. I see this as an opportunity for my students to get involved and learn how valuable service to your community can be, while improving the activity level and quality of life of senior citizens.

Art for Darfur Auction

I plan to help the over one-million Darfurian refugees who have been forced to flee because of the genocide there. I also hope to bring a sharp awareness of this horrific, still-occuring event to the minds of political figures. I recgnize that aid to refugees is not a full solution to the genocide problem, but it will ease the suffering and transtion of many people.

Building Bridges: Nicaragua: Fox Lane High School

At Fox Lane High School, we have a club called Building Bridges which works with Bridges to Community in Nicaragua. For years we have been sending students to Nicaragua to build homes for impoverished citizens of the country. This year was the first year it had become a club in our school, instead of an out of school trip. It has been a great success and this year, in April of 2008, we are sending 22 people to Nicarauga.

Outdoor Classroom for Ridgecrest School

Ridgecrest Elementary is a K-8 school located in a rural community in western Stanly County, North Carolina. This school’s students are nice, friendly, and quite intelligent. Unfortunately, many of the students are not interested in reading. My Eagle Scout project has the potential to correct this problem by creating a fun reading environment for the students. I plan to construct an outdoor classroom area that contains benches and a storyteller’s chair.

Missouri Arts Olympiad

The Missouri Arts Olympiad is a project that got its start at an unlikely place -- a Science Olympiad competition. The idea struck that youth in the arts and humanities have limited exposure to competitions, awards, and prize money for their accomplishments and talents, unlike their science-oriented peers.

Candid Austin Teen Magazine - For teens by teens

Three classmates and I started a local area 32-page color magazine for teenagers. This was developed and funded by teenagers and targeted for teenagers and contains useful information about colleges, trends, news, how-to help, etc. We have put out three issues and the fourth one is in the pipeline. We need financial help to come up with a Spanish version of this magazine which has been very well received in the community.
