The Holland Project

People often forget, that even in the most ill-reputed cities, millions of teenagers are growing up everyday. Reno is not typically a city that is known for it's young people, and Reno for decades has been misconstrued as a desolate and uncultured slump in the sunken mattress of America. The Holland Project is working to change this. The Holland Project is an all ages venue and community project founded locally by Brittany Curtis and Joe Ferguson.

Youth Night

We opened up The After Spot at the West Berkeley Senior Center every Thursday from 5:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. It was a response to the parents concerns about the youth of Berkeley not having a place to be instead of wandering the streets. There have been a lot of killings in Berkeley due to gang violence and teenagers not having a place to go after school. We chose the Senior Center because they have pool tables, internet access and it was a convenient location since a lot of teenagers of color live in West Berkeley. There is also free tutoring by students from UC Berkeley.

Speak Out

A group of students and I have created a speech and debate program at King High School. Most members of the organization are honors students in the International Baccalaureate program. Through student run workshops and team practices, students learn to research a case, write a speech, or prepare an interpretation of literature performance . Many students come to our team as shy freshmen looking for a community, and they soon grow intellectually, learning to express themselves and build confidence.

Bond With Books: Kids Ignite Reading Every Night

Bond With Books is the name of my community project. The possibility of my project is empowerment. I see parents reading to their children at home in my community. My focus is on parents (caretakers) and children from lower socioeconomic areas of my community. My project consists of a two part workshop and an abundance of books to send home. In Palm Beach County 65% of regular education students at the elementary level score low on reading assessments. My eight year son helped name my project which says it all!
