Costa Rica Education Fund

As a 13 year old American, I take much for granted. I realized this even more so last year, as I went on vacation with my family to Costa Rica. It is a beatiful county, with friendly people. However, I was shocked to see the condition that some children live in. As we traveled trough I saw schools (which resemble what we use here as tool sheds)and children going to school with no shoes and no supplies. Since then I have wante dto do something about it and I am ready to act!

Building Bridges: Nicaragua: Fox Lane High School

At Fox Lane High School, we have a club called Building Bridges which works with Bridges to Community in Nicaragua. For years we have been sending students to Nicaragua to build homes for impoverished citizens of the country. This year was the first year it had become a club in our school, instead of an out of school trip. It has been a great success and this year, in April of 2008, we are sending 22 people to Nicarauga.

Spring Garden takes on recycling!

The Spring Garden Do Something Club is tackling the recycling problem in the lunchroom. They contacted the public works departement and requested recycling bins. During each lunch session, members of the club will monitor the bins and encourage children to recycle. Each week, the members are responsible for putting the recycling out for pick up. This pilot program is being launched for the fifth and sixth grade lunch program. If it's successful, hopefully, we can bring it to the lower grades.

Be the Change, Benefit Concert

I am a student at Bozeman High School in Montana and a member of the high school Amnesty International club. Last spring, after watching a movie about child soldiers in Uganda our club was motivated to act. We planned a benefit concert in which we brought four high school bands together to sing and raise awareness. It was a huge success. Hundreds of people came and gave donations. We raised thousands of dollars and educated our community. It is now spring again, and the club is beginning to organize another concert. This time we have decided to raise money for the Central Asia Institute.

STEROIDS Buy Now, Pay Later

As our end of the year class project we dicided to take a deeper look at the availibility of steroids sold through the internet. We found out you can be any one, any age it is all annonymous. Our plan to STOP this problem is to create a program for the police to use and track/shadow online sales. If this goes through we will eventually find a way to use this program to track all drug sellers. We need this grant in order to make the program.

Pet Food Drive

We will hold several tag days outside of local vendors, asking people to donate pet food, pet toys, or anything else "pet-related," so that we can donate the items to our local Humane Shelter. Our main goal will be pet food. A lot of the dogs and cats have lack of a decent meal, with our donation, we are hoping to have no scarcity in their bowls at supper time. However, toys will also be a focus. The animals love something to play around with or even just have something soft to cuddle up with.

Book Bug @ Sandra's Lodge

Recently, my friends and I formed a club called "Book Bug" at the Brookline High School. We noticed that almost every kid in our town has the opportunity to do anything, or be anything they want to be. We know that we are very fortunate to have these opportunities and realized that only ten or fifteen minutes from Brookline there are towns where kids do not have the same freedoms. One thing common between all of the members of our club is our love for books.

Recycle at Your School

Northeast High did not have a recycling program at the school, so the Northeast Ecology club contacted the Recycling department of Broward and bought bins and placed them around the school. Every Tuesday and Thursday, volunteers go around to collect the bins, and take them to the recycling bins, where they are picked up Wednesdays and Fridays. Our next steps are to go to the elementary school down the street, and try to get a recycling program started there, and educate them about recycling and environment.
