Pocket change can change global poverty! This project will include the increased use of change in daily activities of monetary exchange nationwide, including one day in Washington, D.C., designated to particularly promote the use of change in an effort to emphasize exactly how much money the United States has.Members of the movement should plan to pay for further purchases with as much change as possible, thus clogging check-out counters and demanding that more attention be paid to the money in transactions. Banks should be forewarned in areas particularly involved with the movement, that large amounts of cash will be withdrawn in change and thus the change must be there to withdraw.Wherever and whenever possible, citizens should be encouraged to pay large amounts of change for government goods, including paying taxes in person and in change. One workday in Washington, D.C. members of the movement should converge to target businesses in the nation’s capital with the same tactic. Literature should be passed out at every place of purchase emphasizing what that amount of money might buy for an impoverished family or child in a third-world country. On this day, donations may be made to political organizations or candidates, but strictly in change carried directly into the offices of the government officials. Organizers should also target the White House with a well-organized picket attempting to donate change to the President himself in the name of a political party, upcoming election, or directly toward the government’s cost if it provides more funding to global poverty. Again, the demands and goals of the movement should be prominently displayed in leaflets, picket signs, and letters to businesses/officials targeted.
It is the object of this movement that the United States government do more to join in the effort to:
1. Reduce debt in those nations who cannot afford it.
2. Work in favor of the human rights of those facing poverty and hunger—including improved sanitation and access to adequate foodstuffs.
3. Promote education in third-world countries, particularly in the areas of literacy and trades.
The project should call for direct action by the President and Congress to aid those nations facing most affected by extreme poverty, by means of the demands that follow. It should be emphasized that the United States, as a world power, has a duty to help those nations which cannot help their own people and should act first and foremost with the people of the world in mind, not only the governments. It should further be emphasized that it should not be the aim of the United States to buy out the third world, rather to help those nations in need to grow so that they may in the future prosper and return the favor to the U.S. in more subtle ways.
