Located in Southern Westchester County, Mount Vernon, NY is my hometown. I did not go to public schools in the city, but I have understood from a young age the connection between an effective school system and a successful community. Mount Vernon's schools are facing some challenges in the upcoming school year because the budget was voted down twice by voters. Attached to the budget was a NYS Bond that would have provided capital money for repairs and improvements.

This mentoring groups bring positive working males from the community to come and talk with us to help us overcome obstacles such as: high school drop outs, peer pressure, violence, stealing, gang violence, etc. In our community that is infested with drugs we are bringing together the young males to make a difference. We are called MIA (Males In Action). Our population is 900 residents which is primarily elderly, but is booming with young people hanging on the corners and barbershops.
