Project Description
Accident, nature, or by terrorist attacks — we have become much more aware of the devastation that can be caused by unexpected disasters such as these. Since September 11, 2001, much has changed in our world, nation, state, and community. Each day we are worried by the "what ifs" and wonder what we can do.
One of the things that each individual family and community can do is take steps to prepare for a possible disaster. There are many different types of disasters that you can find information on and learn how to be prepared for. You and your family can be safer during and after a disaster if you become informed and prepared now. It is out goal to help our community be able to reduce the risk of injury and even death by becoming informed on what to do before and after a disaster has happened.
Get prepared! We both are 4-H members and feel that getting the information out as to where and what you and your family can do is important. Through the Extension Disaster Education Network we have found that there are many essential areas that can be explored to help everyone be prepared. But, who will take the time. Our goal is to start to get the information out on one small thing called a disaster supply kit.
Dial 2-1-1 and what do you get? Texas-First Call for Help. This company will give immediate help for any disaster but to get ready you can also go to their web site and get information on how to be ready for disaster. Who we have worked with in the past the Texas Cooperative Extension that will come to an area and set up workshops with a group to teach their community how to be prepared.
Through our regular group meetings with 4-H we found out last year how unprepared we are. With our local groups previously mentioned we would set up 2 workshops with apparatus to give to people that showed up to learn how to become prepared for disaster. Not only would they be given the information but we would work with local groups to get more materials that they could use in their kits. We would advertise that part of the workshops to get people to come and learn about how to prepare. Advertisement would be on the radio, newspaper and cable TV.
The money through the Take Action Grant would go to the advertising but mostly for apparatus and information booklets or newsletters for the people coming tq the workshops. We are just beginning but with our 4-H group and local organizations we have gotten information from we believe this can be done efficiently and with a great outcome in the end.
