Global Medical Brigades-NYU chapter

GMB chapters travel to developing countries to perform health care in communities without access to medicine otherwise. The current emphasis is in Central America, where sustainable health care is provided to more than 40 villages. The NYU chapter will be serving the community near Nuevo Paraiso, Honduras. Honduras is a small country in Central America, approximately the size of Tennessee, with a population upwards of 6.7 million people. It’s the second poorest country in Latin America, an estimated 80% of the population lives in poverty.

Project Amani

The Amani Baby Cottage is home to over 50 children age 0-5 years old who have been orphanged due to AIDS or other extreme factors. ABC, located in Jinja, Uganda, is an orphanage run almost entirely by volunteers and the support of individual donors. Since Amani opened in 2003 they have had 131 children come through their doors. 48 of those children have been either reunited with extended family or placed in foster homes. 12 of the children have been placed in another ministry house (they can only stay until they are 5).

Global Youth Health, Education, Leadership Program: Preventing youth from tobacco and promoting healthy lifestyles

As Founder/President of Global Youth H.E.L.P. Inc (Health Education Leadership Program) I conduct tobacco awareness educational programs, train youth peer leaders, and provide educational and sports supplies to improve the physical and emotional wellbeing of disadvantaged youth in the US and in developing countries. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable deaths and the most difficult addiction to overcome. Most smokers start before they turn 18 and tobacco consumption rates are rising among American youth including college students.

BRICK 08

For many years oil has brought corruption, wars, hate, and greed. Sadly most people overlook the enviromental aspect of oil. Oil pollutes virtually everything it touches. Not to mention, when we burn it in our very inefficient cars, it puts many harmful chemicals into our atmostsphere. I plan to take oil completely out of the picture. I want to design a conversion kit for your vehical that cost less than $1000 to buy. Furthermore,it will allow a vehicle to run off of 100% pure vegtable oil.

Seeding Labs

Seeding Labs, a Boston based non-profit organization, reclaims and refurbishes laboratory equipment from universities, hospitals and biotechnology companies in order to equip talented scientists and clinicians living and working in the developing world. Developing countries rarely invest even 1 percent of their GDPs toward building scientific infrastructure, driving an annual exodus of over 20,000 of their most talented professionals to other countries.

HealthCare Volunteer

At least 1.3 billion people worldwide lack access to the most basic healthcare, often because there is no health worker. "The global population is growing, but the number of health workers is stagnating or even falling in many of the places where they are needed most," said Lee Jong-wook, director-general of the World Health Organization in April, 2006.

The Global Micro-Clinic Project

The Global Micro-Clinic Project seeks to empower people to prevent and manage diseases in economically depressed and conflict-ridden areas of our world. The project centers around a community-driven philosophy, forming partnerships between health care professionals, academia, government, and citizens, recognizing that civic involvement is the life-blood of functioning communities and the foundation of healthy cities.
