Gumball Capital

Gumball Capital is a Stanford-based nonprofit organization that inspires entrepreneurship for social impact using the idea of microfinance. Microlending, one part of microfinance, involves making small loans to the poor to help raise them out of poverty. We've found microfinance to be an inspiring method of poverty alleviation, and we want to engage college students across the country with microfinance as well. We're accomplishing this by launching the Gumball Challenge, a national microfinance-benefit competition.

Going Green

Going Green is devoted to taking paper and plastic bags out of stores and making reuseable tote bags a part of American's life to reduce waste and the dangerous effects of paper and plastic bags. I feel that this is very important because of how bad paper and plastic bags are in our environment. Plastic bags can take 1000 years to biodegrade, and both paper and plastic release poisonous materials in the water and soil as they break down. Unsuspecting animals often eat the plastic bags and end up dying because they do not break down in their bodies.

Orange County Prom Project

The Prom Project promotes self-confidence and individual beauty by collecting and distributing free prom dresses and accessories to underprivileged high school girls who cannot otherwise afford them. In addition, we strive to offer meaningful opportunities for Prom Project volunteers to grow personally and professionally by giving their time and talent toward a worthy cause. Costs for attending the prom can be as much as $1000 and many high school girls from low income families cannot afford to purchase prom dresses.

Madison SOS (Speak Out, Sister!)

I launched Madison SOS (Speak Out, Sister!) at age 15, in the spring of 2007. I wanted to do something to address several issues in my community of Madison, Wisconsin relating to young women: poor self-esteem, political apathy, and little knowledge of how they as community members could affect grassroots change. A high school student myself, I decided to focus on the high school audience as my primary constituency.

The Cipher-Austin's Hip Hop Project

In 1999, formerly homeless teen Chris ‘Kazi’ Rolle created the Hip Hop Project through New York City’s Art Start program. Despite common struggles faced by inner city youth, the participants produced their own collective hip hop album, and in the process, gained confidence in their abilities, higher knowledge, and life skills towards a positive future. A documentary of The Hip Hop Project (produced by Bruce Willis and Queen Latifah) released in spring 2007 has inspired other cities to create similar programs.

TeensLead

The mission of TeensLead, L.L.C. is to connect New Orleans area students and incoming volunteers to beautification and service projects in New Orleans; and to further develop individual leadership skills. We intend on achieving this through three goals. 1) Connecting local high school students with service projects in New Orleans. Most New Orleans high school students require service hours to complete their high school education. TeensLead will not only supply service requirements through separate service projects, but re-acquaint local students with their community.

"We Can Do It Too"

While there are so many people and projects in need, I would like to take a moment to tell you about my project to benefit the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley. I have been volunteering at the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley in Howes Cave, New York for the past nine years. In that time I have seen wonderful dogs find wonderful homes; however, I have also seen wonderful dogs wait years to find their forever home. In my time at the shelter I have fostered and found homes for over thirty dogs and two cats.
