We are trying to help the youths in our community to stay off the streets, out of gangs and plant the seed in them to live a positive life. We also show them and tell them about positive ways to achieve anything they want to in life. Especially with school! The first year we had VBS we had 125 youths and teenagers to rotate through our Vacation Bible School over a 4 day period, last year we had over 220 that rotated through. We have touched many.

We strive to plant positive bible base values in our children from the smallest to the biggest. By doing this we always leave them with the feeling that you can always come back and if we can do anything to help we will do our very best.

The steps that are usually taken is volunteer action and we also use our church youth department. Usually I try to committ the money to kick of VBS and our adult members donate what ever we are lacking. However this year we have not had such a good start and things are tight.

Northridge Youth Suite

The church that I grew up in has recently raised enough money to reconstruct its beloved and well-worn youth suite/sunday school class room. Having a youth group of more than 50 kids is of course a blessing for any church, however it can be rather difficult to provide for. For as long as I can remember the place known as the "youth suite" has been in desparate need of a make over. The only places to sit were a few ragged couches that had been donated to the church many years before I was born. The floor consisted of nothing but concrete, and the rest of the space was just that; space. When I heard of the proposal about the renevation of the youth suite I was delighted! Even though I have graduated from high school already and am no longer an actual member of the youth group, I still felt the need to take on a certain amount of responsibility to see that the job got done. After speaking to the youth director and the volunteer contractor, I was assigned the job of senior advisor to the space planning/decoration team and coordinator of meeting times. it was a big job considerating I work full time as a nanny but it is exactually the kind of thing I love spending time doing! It has been a month since the proposal was announced and so much progress has already taken place! Brand new couches have been selected and ordered, sheet rocking has started, floors have been sanded and the overall plan has been approved. It will be another month before the entire project is completed, but with the promise of having a new location for the kids to worship, learn, and come together as a community, everyone agrees the wait is worth while. I am only thankful that I got to have so much say so in the process and that something great will come from it!

Camp Heartland Angels

Camp Heartland Angels is a community organization to raise money for children affected by AIDS. So far, with the help of family, friends and the community, we have raised over $30,000. With that, we have impacted the lives of hundreds of children with AIDS and promoted AIDS awareness throughout schools and our community. We have had over ten events since CHA began, and now we have an annual New Year's Eve Ball!

This project will be a community building for children of all ages where they can spend some time afterschool to unwind and get ready for the next day. At "Da Center" children will have the opprotunity to experience all types of activities such as: Sports, Arts and Crafts, Feild Trips, leadership and responsibility roles, and plays.

Save Our Little Train!

See It: The Community being helped

Our local zoo has a small train that travels through the park and has been a part of our zoo and community for many years. We recently learned that our train was in need of some major repairs and if not repaired, we would lose the little train forever! The Do Something Club at Logan Avenue Elementary School decided to help with the community-wide effort to save the train by hosting a "Penny Drive" in our school. To take it one step further, we got the other elementary schools in our community involved as well! Each school chose to do it a little bit differently but the result was the same. We were able to collect close to $5,000! The amount needed for the train's repairs was over $20,000 and with the community's help as well as the help from the students in our schools, we were able to surpass that goal! The Do Something Club is very thankful for the support and participation of all the kids in Emporia!
