Physical Activity

Vision In Motion (VIM): Youth Empowerment through Dance

In this community an increasing number of people lead sedentary lifestyles and rates of obesity are rising. The need to improve levels of physical activity and develop healthier lifestyles has never been more pressing. If people are to make positive decisions about improving their health and well-being, they need to be able to choose from a range of suitable options. As the fastest growing of all the art forms, dancing can have a powerful effect on people’s lives—physical, emotional, mental, and social benefits.

Chapa 5K Challenge

The Chapa 5K Challenge is an initiative to promote lifelong fitness for school age children and their families. This event culminates a semester long after school fitness program provided to all students at Chapa Middle School. The fitness club has 70 active members. We educate our students on the importance of lifelong fitness and wellness techniques in order to help them utilize these skills in their every day lives. Proceeds from the Chapa 5K Challenge go back to the students involved in the fitness club. Funds are needed to help organize and host this event again this year.

Extreme Makeover: Fitness Roadshow Edition

I am asking for funding for a Clark County School District project called the " Extreme Makeover: Fitness Roadshow Edition." I facilitate secondary PE programs for the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, NV. We would like funding to add more schools to our "tour" schedule. The goal of the fitness roadshow is to bring awareness to the new way of teaching physical education involving moderate to vigorous physical activity for all students. I made alliances with Partners for a Healthy Nevada and Jamba Juice smoothies.

Project Get Fit

Schools are under pressure by No Child Left Behind to improve student test scores. In order to accomplish this the trend is to shorten the time students spend in physical education class or eliminate it all together. Statistics show students who participate in daily exercise have improved concentration levels in the classroom, as well as improved test scores. At the Indianola Learning Center, an alternative high school, we do not have a gym to have the opportunity to exercise.

Fit For Life

I am a physical education teacher at a public high school and instruct a "Fit for Life" after school program. Through this program, the students are developing the knowledge and skills to be...fit for life! They begin to understand the concepts of fitness and a healthy lifestyle and are giving the opportunity to have first hand experience with creating fitness goals. My goal is to teach students how to enhance their physical fitness without the cost of expensive equipment and gym membership.
