Kids across New York State have been saying 'We Will Not Be Bought' to the Tabacco Industry. For two years, myself and the other Westchester County youth advocates have organized community events exposing how much smoking is in youth rated films and their manipulative tactics on how they target today's youth.

Growing up in NC, Chad Bullock is surrounded by empty tobacco warehouses and old tobacco advertisements. He is also constantly surrounded by the deadly smoke from his family member’s lit cigarettes. Chad has always been uneasy by the presence of smoke.
A group of youth noticed that the Durham Bulls Athletic Park allowed cigarette smoking at such as family oriented event. Knowing that smoking causes many illnesses in adults and children we knew something had to be done. Deadly second hand smoke was everywhere, from the seating area to the children’s play area, smoke consumed the air.
Chad Bullock and his peers have taken action to get this unhealthy issue resolved. Chad and his group have met with the management team and gathered community support through fan surveys. At this point, the choice to make the Durham Bulls Athletic Park smoke-free was up to the management.
In early 2007, the Durham Bulls announced that they are making the park smoke-free immediately. The management took our concerns as youth advocates and fans into account. They used our survey results as a source community support. We were very excited about this accomplishment, but the work was not done!
We are also currently meeting with the Durham Bulls to help them raise awareness about the new smoke-free policy. We are offering booths with visuals, free candy, and free face painting to help get our smoke-free message out there.

Within our facility we have a gym, convinients store full of nutritional foods and drinks, and several classrooms where we talk about the concerns with drugs, smoking, obesity, etc.
All our employees are professionals within their field and have college degrees. they are all here to listen and inform. Remember, the people are why we are here. We want to help them, and provide that second chance that they deserve.

Why would anyone decide to throw their life away? Smoking is basically doing that but smokers are too arrogant to see what they are doing to themselves and, especially, to others.

I want to put an end to the smoking population. I want to show the smokers what exactly they are doing to themselves and to their fellow community. I believe I can make this happen through intense psychological treatment. Hopefully, smokers will start emerging as open-minded individuals and stop harming society.

A few of us and some other middle school students worked on two radio ads in collaboration with one of our local radio stations. We came up with, recorded and will soon be playing on the air two anti-smoking radio ads.Our group of seven students worked really hard writing and producing these ads. We hope to impact a lot of our community members to quite and/or never start smoking.This was an awesome dedicated experience!

We are working on the age old problem of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse. We have started a project where older teens that are not involved in any substance abuse mentor younger kids about the rewards of living a healthy lifestyle. Our project is mentoring kids on and off stage in Broadway Revues. Everyone that wants to come into our group can in the capacity of performing on stage, working on props, costumes, sets, fundraising, advertising, and getting more people involved in our community to do something positive for a drug and alcohol free community.

Did you know that 1200 people die each day from smoking realted health issues? The English High School club “Shout Out Against Smoking” decided to join with other teens in the battle against teen smoking. With a grant from The Medical Foundation in Boston, students contacted the KICKBUTTS.ORG and planned many activities to make teens aware of the hazards of smoking. First they conducted a survey to find out who smoked and why. The students also researched the school’s smoking policies regarding smoking on school grounds and posted the information. Next they held several contests to promote their cause. EHS students were asked to submit posters about the hazards of smoking to be used for an 18-month calendar or an essay about the affects smoking had on their family or friends. One student designed a power point presentation and poster for a Youth Action Initiative Summit to be held in April. Another student is producing a PSA (Public Service Announcement) for the same purpose. Other students searched for smoking advertisements, and placed smoking facts on them to be posted as a wall of protest against this type of advertisements promoting smoking. Informational flyers were passed out to all staff and students listing books, videos and other resources from our school library and near by clinic. Students regularly scanned local newspapers for articles about smoking and posted them on the Health room’s bulletin board. March 28th was Kick Butts Day 07 – on this day we had KDB T-shirts for students and staff who passed in smoking facts – 100 T-shirts were given out and worn that day. In fact we ran out of the shirts and were pleased we raised $89.00 for the American Cancer Society for Lung Cancer research. For months, we planned and painted a mural with the number 1200 surrounded by 1200 handprints to represent the people who die each day from smoking issues. The mural stops everyone and when they ask what the 1200 means the students feel proud that are able to impact so many people with just a few numbers and words.

 in the past year we have had two student pass away at our school. One of the students made a wrong choice, and the other one, the person that killed him made the wrong choice. On March 16, our SADD chapter is hosting a basketball game to inform the students that you need to make the right choices. we are gonna talk about drinking, safe driving and tobacco.

Meghan, a longtime sufferer of Asthma, wanted to share her opinion and lobby for a public smoking ban in her state. She started a club at her school to raise awareness about the hazards of tobacco, encourage young people to make healthy life choices, train youth leaders and promote youth participation in the legislative process.
