The Art of School

The problem I am trying to solve is that of the epidemic of apathy toward academic success. Many of my high school peers value their academics significantly lower than sports, girls, partying, and other things. While those things are fun, academic success is one of the most powerful investments in their future. I want to make balanced academic achievement once again a priority for my generation.

Outside The Box

I started a Youth in Action Group with a couple of friends to try and make a difference in the world. We call ourselves "Outside The Box." We now have more than 25 members in New Jersey and friends in Texas starting a chapter. Our initial project is to raise $8,500 to build a school in Sierra Leone, Africa through a charity called Free The Children. Free The Children is the worlds largets network of kids helping kids through education. We chose Sierra Leone because of the United Nation's statement that it is the worst place in the world to live and we wanted to help change that.

Gazebo Beautification

Seniors in our school only have one privilege; they can drive to school. Once past the parking lot, a freshman is the same as a senior; we want to change this by creating a new space for seniors to enjoy as strictly a senior privilege. There is a gazebo at the edge of a pond on the one side of our campus just outside the cafeteria; this gazebo is currently not finished and seems to be in rough shape. Classes before us have tried their best to work with the space and material already there, but all have failed; we won’t.

Sino Scholars

Sino Scholar is a non-profit project supported by a Michigan high school club, Sino Club. We seek to lend a hand to those half-way around the world by supporting children in poverty to obtain opportunities to go to school. In the summer 2007, we gave $25 to two students each, making them able to attend school for the entire year! After seeing the impact of that small sum, we hope to expand our cause and reach even more students this year and allow our fellow sisters and brothers around the school continue to be students.

Rock for a Cause

[This was the description sent to my school, and got approved]
Rock for a Cause

With great focus on “Continuing the Tradition of Excellence.” I propose that Coeur d’Alene High School starts a concert, which is paid for by donations by students. There are already bands from this school that has expressed interest in performing for free, in order to further the cause of earning money for the following charities:

          o The Red Cross
o UN.Gift
o Save Darfur
o UNICEF
Mississippi-Vermont Community Connection

Students of the Mississippi-Vermont Community Comection class at Twinfield Union School in Marshfield, Vermont have been learning from a “Rights in Action” curriculum. It is a model that enables students to reflect, create and fulfill action plans while building a voice that empowers and is shaped by community. Imagine a new generation of citizen activists bridging our nation’s North and South divide, raising their voices on important public issues, and enlisting community leaders and educators as partners in the civic and political life of their communities.

Recycle at Your School

Northeast High did not have a recycling program at the school, so the Northeast Ecology club contacted the Recycling department of Broward and bought bins and placed them around the school. Every Tuesday and Thursday, volunteers go around to collect the bins, and take them to the recycling bins, where they are picked up Wednesdays and Fridays. Our next steps are to go to the elementary school down the street, and try to get a recycling program started there, and educate them about recycling and environment.
