children in need

the problem:

Many of the people who are sent to jail or prison leave their children at home for the police to carry off. They are then put in foster homes without any of their belongings. That means, none of their favorite foods, clothes or toys. CLAC gives them a chance to have things that feel familiar to them, when they need them the most.

I am starting a book drive with friends of mine in the 7th grade at the Park School to supply books, magazines, comic books and DVD's for children at the Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts. The Boston Medical Center sees almost 75,000 kids every year, most from the inner city, and many without any books at home. They speak over 70 languages. Many of them don’t have any books at home. Whenever a kid visits Boston Medical, they try to give the child a book if one is available. I go to the Park School in Brookline, this is where I am going to have my drive.

Our goal is to collect 5,000 items annually.

My friend Olivia and I started a teen volunteer group called VIPs (Volunteers in Putnam (County)

When we heard that there are over 400 homeless kids in our county we wanted to do something. We decided to do a 24 Hour Famine, going hungry for 24 hours and getting sponsors. We recruited other kids through Myspace and the YMCA let us use their facility.

We ended up with 10 kids, all of them made if for the whole 24 hours. We raised $800 and the newspaper did a big story, so others now know about these kids living in terrible conditions.

The money was used for gift cards for the neediest kids, so they could by what they needed most. Kids were referred through United Way by local agencies.

Everyone wants to do it next year, only bigger.

I am writing with a specific appeal for 3-year-old Sah Johnson. Sah lives in Sierra Leone and was born with a major growth on his spinal cord. I first met Sah about a year ago in his home in a refugee camp outside of Freetown the capital of Sierra Leone. Since then, his situation has rapidly deteriorated. Due to immobility, both his legs are infested with large sores. My friend Hazel Chandler has created a short 1 min film to give you a visual on Sah's condition. You can access online at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3071329875850875037Unfortunately, the operation Sah needs cannot be done in Sierra Leone. If you are a doctor/surgeon or if you know anybody who might be able to help us bring Sah to the US for this operation, I would greatly appreciate if you'd let me know. Please feel free to distribute this email to as wide an audience as you can. I know that somewhere out there are people who could pull together to save Sah's life. I hope you'll take a moment to help us help this child. WHAT WE NEED:

  • A doctor, surgeon or hospital willing to perform the surgery
  • People who are willing to provide air miles or cash donations to cover airfare
  • A family to host Sah Johnson and his parents when they come to the US
