School and Community Outdoor Classroom and Learning Center

A project at a local middle school will focus on creating school attachments and community bonds through

volunteering to create an outdoor classroom, trail, and set of learning centers. Students will utilize

critical thinking, inquiry, reading comprehension, writing, and math skills to research and design a nature

trail and outdoor classroom. The area includes forest land and grassy areas with a creek that runs through

the middle. Students will then work with school officials and community volunteers to build the outdoor

classroom.

Nature Refuge Bird Blind

My project is a 12'x 25' observation blind in our community nature refuge. It will have one-way glass so nature can be observed clearly without disrupting the normal activity of the birds, etc. The blind will have picnic tables so that local school can bring classes of students in for lessons on conservation, ecology, birds, nature, etc. It will also be open at all times to the community.

I have begun building the blind, but still need funds for the glass and storage bins for seed, etc.

The office I work for is hosting a Conservation and Wildlife Expo. At our Expo (held August 22nd-24th) we put on educational presentations for the public, have vendors, do educational activities such as build bird houses, teach the importance of recycling, teach kids how to shoot a bow and arrow properly and safely, have trap shooting/archery competitions, and in general try to spread the word about environmental stewardship. At a recent Homeowners Association meeting, dozens of community members expressed concern with an unused, uncared-for, unsightly piece of school property that collects trash and seems to encourage troublesome loitering of teenagers. We believe we can turn this area into a positive part of the community that encourages integration of school curriculum, neighborhood ties, nature appreciation, and pride in self.

Our group is planning, raising funds, and will be laboring to begin a school/community park in hopes of increasing respect for nature and pride in the community.

We live in a very small town in central Oklahoma. Our town has less than 500 people. We don't have any health clubs or boys and girls clubs for the people to use. We do have a very large, and beautiful park with some playground equipment and two baseball fields. What we are working on is building a fitness trail that everyone in our community can use.
