See It: The Community being helped
The Conscious Alliance www.consciousalliance.org creates opportunities for social action within music, art, and athletic communities to eliminate hunger and promote hunger awareness. We facilitate the redistribution of food to the hungry in cities and impoverished Indian Reservations.
Our New project Youth Against Hunger project (Y.A.H.) offers exciting alternative service-learning experiences for college students during their fall/spring breaks. Y.A.H synthesizes service learning by combining education and hands-on service. Y.A.H students learn about hunger related issues, as well as Lakota culture, by providing compassionate cross-cultural community service on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. While on the reservation, students lodge with community leaders Floyd and Natalie Hand, as they sort and distribute food to community members in need, aid with home repairs for Lakota families, participate in educational sessions with Lakota elders, and communicate with Pine Ridge college students and peers about current cultural, social, economic, and environmental issues. Conscious Alliance’s Y.A.H provides students with the knowledge and support they need to return to their respective communities and, using the skills they have acquired, create positive change in their local communities.

| People Involved: | Conscious Alliance just hosted our first Y.A.H. project for Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC this past October. Eleven students and two staff members form Warren Wilson took part in the project. Our students from Warren Wilson are actively working to educate and provide opportunities for other students to get involved. We look forward to hosting this program for other colleges and universities. | People Impacted: | The Y.A.H project provides food and home repairs for countess families in need on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The service and education does not stop when our students leave the reservation. Upon returning to their communities Y.A.H. students give educational presentations to their community. Conscious Alliance offers support to Y.A.H. students to continue the ripple effect. Our students have the opportunity to give presentations and host food drives at local grade schools, middle schools and high schools. Conscious Alliance helps their students bring guest speakers from Pine Ridge and socially active groups to their community to greater educate others. |
